Hello,

I am trying to install Ubuntu on an old HP device which has no current operating system installed. I believe the hard-drive has been reformatted (not sure what type). I tried to USB boot, but every time I got to boot options (F9) and then click on the only option that says; 'Boot from EFI File'. It comes up with my USB device, but after clicking on that - it comes up with; '<System Volume Information>' and then after clicking on that it comes up with; '<..>'. On the USB device I have the Latest Ubunto .iso file. By the way I clicked 'Windows 11' for the category because it seemed most relevant.

Thanks a lot,

Josh.

The solution is quite simple. Use rufus to create a bootable USB from the .ISO file. Then just install it normally 🙂

Hi, Josh:

Go into the BIOS, enable legacy mode and disable secure boot, and you should be able to boot from the legacy USB diskette on key/USB hard drive with the ubuntu ISO file on it.

Hi Paul,

Thankyou for responding. This solution changes the way the system starts up, but when selecting the USB drive it comes up with the message; 'Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key'.

Thankyou,

Josh.

You're very welcome, Josh.

Unfortunately, I don't have any other suggestions for you to try.

I wouldn't know why the notebook isn't booting from the USB flash drive and installing Ubuntu if it is showing up as a bootable device now.

Are you sure you made the bootable Ubuntu installer correctly?

What that message is indicating is that it can't boot from the USB flash drive because there are no/missing boot files on it.

Hi Paul,

I just checked on the USB and there is the .ISO file on it. Maybe my hard-drive on the computer is formatted incorrectly so the boot file can't load?

Thankyou for trying to help,

Josh.
