Hi @EvelynMSmith,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Boot Device Not Found" error on an HP laptop typically indicates that the laptop is unable to locate a bootable device (such as a hard drive or SSD) to load the operating system from. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

Check Boot Order:

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS or UEFI setup utility. This is usually done by pressing a specific key (such as F10, F2, or Esc) during startup. Once in the BIOS/UEFI, navigate to the Boot menu and ensure that the boot order is set correctly, with the internal hard drive or SSD listed as the primary boot device.

Ensure Drive is Recognized:

  • While in the BIOS/UEFI setup utility, check if the laptop detects the internal hard drive or SSD. If it's not listed, it could indicate a connection issue or a hardware failure. Try reseating the drive (if possible) or inspecting the connections.

Reset BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Sometimes, resetting the BIOS or UEFI settings to default can resolve boot issues. In the BIOS/UEFI setup utility, look for an option to reset settings to default or optimized defaults. After resetting, save the changes and exit the setup utility.

Run Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Many HP laptops come with built-in hardware diagnostic tools that can help identify hardware problems. Restart your laptop and repeatedly press the Esc key to access the Startup Menu. From there, select the option for diagnostics (usually labeled as "HP Diagnostics" or similar) and run a comprehensive test of your laptop's hardware components, including the hard drive.

Check Hard Drive Connections:

  • If your laptop has a traditional hard drive (HDD), check the connections between the hard drive and the motherboard. Ensure that the SATA cable (if applicable) and power cable are securely connected. For laptops with solid-state drives (SSDs), ensure that the SSD is properly seated in its slot.

Recover or Reinstall Operating System:

  • If the above steps don't resolve the issue and your hard drive or SSD is still not detected, you may need to attempt to recover the operating system using recovery tools provided by HP or reinstall the operating system from scratch. You may need to use a recovery USB drive or installation media to perform this step.

By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and resolve the "Boot Device Not Found" error on your HP laptop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
