Envy 4 1105dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This computer was forced into Windows 10 from Windows 8 (not sure what edition) and Windows 10 start menu didn't work and you couldn't click on anything but the calendar and clock and small things like that, no settings or anything. I tried to get into the recovery menu and was able to "refresh" and it's as if this thing just died. I have Windows 7 Pro on a flash drive as well as Windows 10 Pro on a flash drive to try to get into this system to reinstall either OS, but after enabling legacy boot I attempted to do a repair from the Windows 10 usb drive and now this won't even let me get into the BIOS. This laptop keeps coming up "Your PC/Device needs to be repaired" error 0xc0000225 and no matter what keys I press it won't let me get into the BIOS or even boot from usb anymore. I unplugged the hdd and I can access the BIOS but I'm not sure where to go from here.

Hello,

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.

Based on your description, your problem is not relared to BIOS and you do not necessary need to login there at the moment.
For general reference, here is how to enter BIOS:

1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button

2. Power it on.

2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, keep hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one

3. Choose F10 to open BIOS options

In order to fix the issue, though, you will need to restore Windows (OS), restore the PC to factory default settings.

This is the recommended way because it will restore(reset) the PC to the way it was on 1st boot, will restore Windows, settings, programs, drivers. If the F11 option with built-in recovery partition didn't work well, you need to purchase original HP Recovery media.

This one >> http://www.computersurgeons.com/p-23353-windows-8-64-bit-usb-recovery-kit-710641-004-for-hp-envy-tou...

is the correct media for your model.

You can purchase is from this 3rd party seller.

Once you get the recovery media, here are instructions how to perform the recovery:

When ready with the USB drive:

* Ensure Secure Boot is disabled.

* Ensure Legacy mode is enabled

* Save the UEFI/BIOS changes.

Details>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03653226

Once ready, please, shutdown the computer using the power button.

Insert the Windows USB thumdrive prepared previously

Power  on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, keep hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one

Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the thumb drive as boot option.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 8.1

Hope this works. Let me know if you experience any issues.

I have finally put Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 both on the seperate hdds. I installed different ones because neither if them will let me do Windows update on them now. I keep getting an error 8024402C so neither of them I can really get going now.

Hello,

This error is somewhat generic.

** Please, check your Internet connectivity , check your proxy settings >> http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-update/windows-update-error-8024402c/6984...

** Run Windows Update Troubleshooter or manually reset WU components. More info >> https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/971058

** Install latest WU Agent >> https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/949104

For Windows 7 particularly, a  workaround I can offer is to :

- update Windows 7 Update Agent manually to the latest version >> https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/949104

- download directly from MS "April 2015 Servicing stack update" and install it manually

- download Win 7 Convenience roll up update and install it manually

>> x64 Win

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/software/updt/2016/05/windows6.1-kb3125574-v4-...

>> x86 Win

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/software/updt/2016/05/windows6.1-kb3125574-v4-...

This update package, which combines updates dating all the way back to February 2011, isn’t being made available in Windows Update. If you’re installing a Windows 7 system from scratch, you’ll need to go out of your way to download and install it. If you don’t, Windows Update will download and install the updates one by one–the slower, more tedious way.

You will now have all Win 7 updates since its initial release till May 2016

After that you may try to install newer updates.

Hope this works for you. Let me know how it goes.

Thank you for the information. I'm off on Monday and Tuesday so I will try all of these steps and let you know where that takes me.

I'm still not able to get the updates to work through Windows Update screen, I had to download this program that checked for updates offline and I had put the porgam on a flash drive and keeps checking it that way to get the updates but there's not that many updates that downloaded. I was looking into seeing if someone has the recovery media for this laptop that I could downlaod and use.

Hello,

I am sorry - would you elaborate on your last comment ?

Do you have Internet connection on this laptop (no matter what Windows version you use) ?

Did you perform the steps I mentioned above - WU Agent, Win 7 update, proxy settings , etc... ?

Could you be very specific and provide step by step info what you did and what happens...

You are asking for recovery media - the original HP Recovery media can be obtained from here >> http://www.computersurgeons.com/p-23353-windows-8-64-bit-usb-recovery-kit-710641-004-for-hp-envy-tou...

It is for Windows 8 and will restore your PC to factory default settings with Windows 8.

For the recovery media to work, the HDD that is in the PC needs to be the same size (or bigger) as the initial HDD (smaller size may not work)

If you decide to go this route (a.k.a. use HP Recovery media), do this once you receive the HP Recovery media:

Please, shutdown the computer using the power button.

Insert the Windows USB thumdrive

Power  on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, keep hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one

Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the thumb drive as boot option.

You will boot from the USB device. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows

I have put Windows 7 on the hard drive and downloaded all of the drivers from their support page and most of them work. I can't ever get the wifi to work but I can use my phone or ethernet cord to connect to the internet. I do have an internet connection but Windows Update just doesn't seem like it's actually connecting to the server or something. I've done all of the net start bit/stop bit stuff and nothing seems to work doing that.

I've used g program to check for updates offline from a flash drive(http://download.wsusoffline.net/) and that seemed to get some of the updates. I will purchase the recovery drive and hope that it doesn't end up a waste of money. That's pretty much all of the information that I can think of at this time. My main point in doing all of this is to get Windows 7 on this machine since Windows 8/10 is terrible.

@irkorn18

Thank you for the clarification.

If you use a search engine and search for Windows 7 update issues, you will notice a lot of people complaining of W7 update problem recently in the past 1-2 years and people suspect Microsoft does not set WIndows 7 on priority on their servers due to recent Windows 10 upgrade. Meaning that if you use "old Windows" like Windows 7, you are on very low priority.

Pure Windows 7 installation , even Win 7+SP1 is old one and it needs quite a lot of updates from Microsoft to reach updated state.

Additionally, as far as I can remember, there was some bug which required people to first update WU Agent to be able to update.

A workaround available is the one I posted above : in addition to SP1 built in, update WU Agent, install April Service update, install Convenient roll up update. This is proven, tested and works and will update even offline machine to all W7 updates till April/May.

This saves quite a lot of time. After that if you attempt to run/check Windows Update, it will (should) work faster and will have to apply a lot less updates than if you do not run the workaround. Consider the convenient roll up update as somewhat official "Service Pack" - massive single patch (but hidden, not for the masses).

Even if you use HP Recovery media - it will restore the PC to factory default condition - it will fix viruses, OS issues, it will install initial drivers, apps, etc. but this does not include updates. If W7, the above is recommended to be performed nontheless.

The recovery media above is for Windows 8 - your PC originally comes with Windows 8 preinstalled (not sure if Win 8 or 8.1). The recovery media should be able to activate Win 8, not 7.

If you want to use Windows 7, you need to obtain your own legitimate Windows 7 license and installation media, install Windows 7, install all W7 drivers from HP web site >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-ENVY-4-Sleekbook/5296620/model/5312197

In my humble personal opinion Windows 7 and 8.1 are better than Windows 10. Windows 8.1 is not that bad, in some cases is better than Windows 7 and can be configured a lot to run and look similar to Windows 7. It's best to use Windows 8/8.1

If you need further assistance with whatever, please, let me know. I'd appreciate it if you provide your feedback.

Cheers ! 🙂
