Microsoft Windows 11

So i have a victus laptop, sometimes when i boot it i get CMOS checksum invalid (502). So i got it to a repair center they opened up the laptop and couldn't find the CMOS battery, they checked literally everywhere they literally disassembled the laptop and still couldn't find it so they installed me a new battery which the next day i tried gaming with but the pc restarts after 15-20 mins of gaming and before having the battery, the laptop used to freeze so i had to restart it then get the message but now after getting the battery it just automatically restarts and when i boot it back up, i sometimes get the message . So i went back to the center and they gave me back my battery and refunded the one they gave me, still, now when i play, in abt 15mins-1hr it restarts automatically. I thought maybe it was a virus so i formatted the whole pc, re-installed steam and the games, and still, after 15mins-1hr it automatically restarts and sometimes when i boot up the laptop i get the CMOS checksum invalid (502) message even when it doesn't restart. What should i do ?

Hi @SalimJJ, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Your Victus laptop showing the CMOS Checksum Invalid (502) error and random restarts suggests a deeper issue, possibly related to the CMOS storage, BIOS, or motherboard power regulation. Since the repair center couldn't find a CMOS battery, your laptop likely uses an embedded CMOS storage on the motherboard rather than a traditional replaceable coin-cell battery.

BIOS Issues (Corruption, Update Needed)

Try a BIOS Reset:

  • Turn off the laptop and press Win + B + Power Button together for 10 seconds.
  • If this works, it should reset your BIOS settings.

Update BIOS (if possible)

  • Since you formatted the PC, check if your BIOS version is up-to-date.
  • Go to HP's official site, enter your laptop's model, and download the latest BIOS update.

Overheating Issues

  • Since it restarts after 15 min - 1 hr of gaming, overheating might be a cause.
  • Check your temperatures using HWMonitor or HWInfo. If CPU/GPU hits 90°C+, your system may be shutting down to prevent damage.
  • Clean the vents & repaste the thermal compound if possible.
  • Limit power usage:
    • Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D settings → Power Management Mode → Set to "Prefer maximum performance".
    • Open Windows Power Plan → Set to Balanced or Power Saver.

Power Delivery Problems

  • The internal power circuitry (VRM/EC chip) could be failing, which is why the laptop restarts instead of freezing after the repair.
  • Test with different power adapters to see if it changes behavior.
  • If your battery is removable, try running the laptop without the battery and see if it still restarts.

Embedded CMOS Chip Issue (Motherboard Related)

  • Since there was no replaceable CMOS battery, your motherboard likely has a built-in CMOS storage chip.
  • If this chip is failing, BIOS settings reset every time, leading to checksum errors.
  • This could require a motherboard replacement or reprogramming the BIOS chip at an advanced repair center.
