HP Notebook 15s-fq1012tu

Hello.
This CMOS Checksum is invalid. This black screen started to appear out of the blue. My laptop is

HP Notebook 15s-fq1012tu and have windows 11 . The laptop can operate normally when it is plugged in , but if I plugged it out it lasts only between 15- 30 min and shuts down without even a warning .

I tried several of solutions

  • Updated the windows
  • updated the drivers
  • updated the bios , it was F.30 now it is F.31 before the update the fans were very loud bit after they become normal iguess
  • tried to clean the fans without dissemble the laptop.

what else should i do, and what the causes of this problem!! I’m afraid it’s a battery related?
Sorry for the poor english.

Hi @Am207,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're encountering several issues with your HP Notebook 15s-fq1012tu, including a CMOS checksum error, unexpected shutdowns when unplugged, and loud fan noise. Let's address each of these problems.

  • CMOS Checksum Invalid Error: This error typically indicates a problem with the CMOS battery or the BIOS settings. Since you've already updated the BIOS and the error persists, it's possible that the CMOS battery needs to be replaced. The CMOS battery powers the CMOS memory, which stores BIOS settings including the system clock. If the battery is failing, it can cause checksum errors. Replacing the CMOS battery is relatively simple and inexpensive.
  • Unexpected Shutdowns When Unplugged: The fact that your laptop can only operate normally when plugged in suggests that there may be an issue with the battery. It's possible that the battery is not holding a charge properly, which could be causing the laptop to shut down abruptly when unplugged. This could be due to a faulty battery or a problem with the charging circuitry. Since your laptop is still relatively new, it's unlikely that the battery has reached the end of its lifespan, but defects can still occur.
  • Loud Fan Noise: The fact that the fan noise decreased after updating the BIOS suggests that the firmware update may have improved fan management or performance. However, if the fan noise is still louder than expected, it could indicate that the laptop is running hot, possibly due to dust buildup or inadequate cooling. Since you've already tried cleaning the fans without disassembling the laptop, it's possible that there's still some dust or debris obstructing airflow. You may need to disassemble the laptop to access and clean the fan and heatsink thoroughly. Alternatively, consider using a laptop cooling pad to help dissipate heat.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I dissembled the laptop and found that the battery is swollen on one side. And couldn’t find the cmos battery is it embedded in the main battery?
and is replacing the swollen battery will solve CMOS battery checksum?
thank you for replying fast

Hi @Am207,

Thank you for your response,

If the battery in your HP Notebook 15 is swollen, it's crucial to address this issue promptly as a swollen battery can pose a safety risk. Here are some steps you can take.

Replace the Swollen Battery:

  • Swollen batteries should be replaced immediately. Continuing to use a swollen battery can lead to further damage to your laptop and may pose a fire hazard.

CMOS Battery:

  • The CMOS battery in laptops is typically a small, coin-shaped battery located on the motherboard. In some laptop models, especially newer ones, the CMOS battery may be embedded within the main battery pack. Disassembling your laptop further or consulting the service manual for your specific model may help you locate the CMOS battery.

Resetting CMOS:

  • In some cases, replacing the main battery (including the CMOS battery if it's embedded) may resolve issues related to CMOS checksum errors. When you replace the main battery, it may reset the CMOS settings, including the system clock and BIOS settings, which can resolve errors related to CMOS checksum.

It's important to address both the swollen battery and any issues related to CMOS checksum errors to ensure the proper functioning and safety of your HP Notebook 15.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
