Question I would like to Recover the BIOS for using a USB recovery drive. As described at https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_3932413-2337994-16

I have downloaded sp147423.exe from the HP product support page. https://support.hp.com/ca-en/drivers/swdetails/hp-envy-15-cn0000-x360-convertible-pc/model/22185738/...

TITLE: HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors)
VERSION: F.31 REV: A PASS: 1

HARDWARE PRODUCT MODEL(S):
HP ENVY x360 15 Convertible PC

Can this sp147423.exe run on a second system to recreate a USB recovery drive? It is not clear in the download release notes. If I run it, I don't want it to update attempt to update the secondary PC's bios or cause a problem.

Hi, @JT891

If the file allows for it, yes, you can make a BIOS recovery drive on any PC.  I have done it many times.

When you actually run it on another PC, the options to update the BIOS and copy the image on the PC you run it on will be grayed out.

You will only have the option to create a BIOS recovery drive.

I just ran sp147423.exe on my Dell Optiplex 7050 MT and it successfully created a BIOS recovery drive for your notebook.

No, it will expand and apply dor THAT machine. You can copy (not RUN) original file to USB and run on your system.

Regards.

@Banhien: Thank-you for the quick reply. I was considering it following instructions, but realize not every bios update .exe  will have the response as shown here.

SInce I currently have a blank, screen, just power Led and Power Button Led (on 10 sec, off, on 2 sec) and tried a series of other options including:

hard reset, (unplugged, power button 15 seconds, Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.)

CMOS reset (unplug power hold power down for 25 sec, then turn the computer on )

Recover the BIOS using a key press combination (

  • Turn off the computer and be sure that the AC adapter is connected to power.

  • Press and hold the Windows + b keys, and then simultaneously press the power button.
  • After 2 to 3 seconds, continue to press and hold the Windows + b keys, but release the power button. You might hear a series of beeps.)

Thought I would consider Recover the BIOS using a USB recovery drive. since I can't get to BIOS menu (Power on, ESC, F2 at prompt) not sure putting bios update .exe on usb drive will work as BIOS recovery drive, using Windows+b keys.

Is there a bios update that I can use to create USB recovery drive?. The instructions say "

Navigate to the product page for your computer.

Select BIOS, and then review the details of the latest available version or the specific version recommended for the recovery."

The laptop was working after I removed a bloated battery, but did not boot after putting in a new one. Perhaps the Bios got corrupted.

Any further advice or suggestions are appreciated. Perhaps I should put this in another question. Thanks.

(The  HP ENVY x360 - 15-cn0008ca has a M.2 ssd, no sata HDD)

You're very welcome.

I tried it and as you mentioned it did give me the option to create  a BIOS recovery drive.

Unfortunately I haven't had success it booting the laptop yet, but at least I was able to create the Bios recovery drive.

Thanks.

Sorry that the recovery drive has not restored your notebook's BIOS.
