Can't switch from pin to password on welcome screen or change forgotten pin

Somehow on the lock screen where password or pin gets put in, my password login got switched to pin login. Unfortunately after having the laptop for so long, the pin was forgotten since it was the password that was used the most. After many attempts at the wrong pin being put in, we attempted to do forgot pin. That in turn led us to mircosoft login to an email we now longer use or have access to or remember the password to but putting forgot password for that still leads to more problems since apparently microsoft can't find that account. All we really want is to get back to password login on hp laptop so we can get other things taken care of on that same laptop.
