Hello everyone, I cannot disable secure boot on my laptop to install Arch.
Whenever I try to disable it and save changes, it still keeps secure boot enabled and doesn’t let me boot into my USB because it isn’t authenticated.
I tried to enable legacy mode and disable secure boot that way but that also doesn’t seem to work.
Does anyone know the solution to this issue?
(Yes, I have tried setting an admin password)

Hi @Muffin717,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I understand how frustrating it must be to face these secure boot issues, especially when you’re excited to start your Arch installation. Let's dig in to see if we can get it working.
To help clarify the situation, could you let me know:
- The model of your HP Pavilion and the BIOS version you're using?
- If you've received any error messages while disabling secure boot?
- Any other boot options you might have tried?
Here are a few steps that might help:
Update the BIOS (if not already updated):
- Check HP’s support site for any BIOS updates specific to your model. Updating to the latest version might fix a bug that prevents Secure Boot from disabling correctly.
Clear Secure Boot Keys:
- In the BIOS settings, look for the Secure Boot menu, and select Clear Secure Boot Keys. This can sometimes allow Secure Boot to be disabled.
- After clearing, try disabling Secure Boot again and save changes.
Attempt a UEFI/Legacy Boot Mode Combination:
- Some HP models may require a specific combination of UEFI and Legacy settings to disable Secure Boot. Enable Legacy Mode and set the boot mode to Both (UEFI/Legacy), then try disabling Secure Boot again.
Disable Fast Boot in BIOS:
- Fast Boot can interfere with secure boot settings. Disable Fast Boot in BIOS if it’s enabled, then attempt to disable Secure Boot.
Load BIOS Defaults and Retry:
- In BIOS, select Load Setup Defaults or Restore Defaults. This can reset any unexpected settings that might be preventing Secure Boot from disabling. After restoring defaults, try disabling Secure Boot again.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
