Hi @zinge,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 17 Laptop PC doesn't have a legacy boot option in the BIOS and you're unable to boot from USB or external CD/DVD, there might be a few things you can try.

  • Check BIOS Settings: Even if there isn't a specific "legacy" option, there might be other settings related to boot order or boot mode that could affect your ability to boot from external devices. Explore the BIOS thoroughly to ensure you haven't missed any relevant options.
  • Update BIOS: Sometimes, updating the BIOS can add new features or options that might help with booting from external devices. Check the HP support website for your laptop model and see if there are any BIOS updates available.
  • Secure Boot: If Secure Boot is enabled, it might prevent booting from external devices that aren't recognized as trusted. Try disabling Secure Boot in the BIOS and then attempt booting from USB or external CD/DVD again.
  • UEFI vs Legacy Boot: While you mentioned there isn't a legacy boot option, it's possible that your laptop only supports UEFI booting. Make sure that the USB or external CD/DVD is prepared for UEFI booting. You might need to create a UEFI bootable USB drive or use UEFI-compatible bootable media.
  • Try Different USB Ports: Sometimes, certain USB ports might not be recognized as bootable by the BIOS. Try using different USB ports on your laptop to see if that makes a difference.
  • Check Bootable Media: Ensure that the USB drive or external CD/DVD is properly prepared and contains a bootable operating system or installation media. You can verify this by trying to boot from the same media on another computer.
  • Hardware Issues: If none of the above solutions work, there might be a hardware issue with your laptop's USB ports or the external CD/DVD drive.

Try these steps one by one, and hopefully, you'll be able to boot from USB or external CD/DVD on your HP 17 Laptop PC.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hp has taken so much from bios now. I have already disabled secure boot-no difference  That is the only option available. There are no other options in bios to let usb boot..

Hp needs to make an bios update to fix this mess..

I am sure others have the same problem.
