Hello HP Community,

My computer has not been able to boot into windows for the past 3 days.

When i turn on the computer the hp logo and a spinning wheel com eon but nothing happens. After I restart it than says " Preparing Automatic Repair". After a few minutes an error screen come up saying it ran into a problem and need to restart and give an error code "DRIVER_PNP_WATCHDOG (0x1D5)". I have read previous community chats saying to boot into safe mode which does not do anything on my computer. I also say to hit f11 to get into system recovery, which the computer then goes into the hp logo with spinning wheel saying please wait. The same "DRIVER_PNP_WATCHDOG (0x1D5)" error comes up after a few minutes. I also ran diagnostics through the "HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI" and ran the fast and extensive test and everything came up ok with a check mark.

Thank you in advance

Hi @Daugh1001,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing all those details that help narrow things down. The DRIVER_PNP_WATCHDOG (0x1D5) error usually indicates a driver initialization failure during boot, often related to storage or chipset drivers. Since diagnostics passed, the hardware is likely fine, and this is a Windows boot corruption issue.

Here’s a structured approach to fix this:

Step 1: Confirm Boot Options

  • Power on and tap F11 → If recovery still fails, we’ll use a bootable USB.

Step 2: Create Windows 11 Recovery Media

On another PC:

  1. Download Windows 11 Installation Media Tool from HP: HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Support
  2. Create a bootable USB (32GB or larger).

Step 3: Boot from USB

  1. Insert the USB into your HP Notebook.
  2. Power on → Tap Esc → Select Boot Menu → Choose USB.

Step 4: Repair Windows

  • On the setup screen, click Repair your computer (bottom-left).
  • Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced Options
    • Startup Repair (first try).
    • If that fails, open Command Prompt and run:
    • sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows
    • DISM /Image: C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

(Adjust drive letter if Windows is on D:)

Step 5: If Still Failing

  • From Advanced Options, try System Restore (if restore points exist).
  • If not, Reset this PC (keep files if possible).

Step 6: Last Resort

If none of the above works, perform a clean install of Windows 11 using the same USB.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
