15-bw068sa
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a tricky problem on my HP notebook 15-bw068sa. Whatever I try I cannot get it to boot from any device! HD, USB etc.

Problem started I think with a Windows 10 update crash. Machine got into infinite blue screen reboot loop. So initally pressing F10 would not bring up the BIOS screen unless I removed the hard drive. The machine would always hang on entering BIOS.

So I have removed the hard drive and taken a backup of files on there. With hard drive removed I can now press F10 and get to BIOS screen. But whatever I change in the BIOS will not persist. Following a reboot settings are back to default. So I cannot select to boot from a USB stick or anything. Placing a bootable drive in USB boot will not boot. Placing original hard disc back will not boot. Changing from secure boot to legacy does not seem to work either. I've removed and tested the CMOS battery, seems fine. I've cleared the CMOS settings back to factory defaults, still no Joy.

How on earth can I get BIOS changes to stick and boot an OS !!

BIOS on the motherboard is reporting as Insyde BIOS version F.13 .

replace the CMOS battery

Thank you for the reply. Tried that, as stated. No difference.

Have you run HP Diagnostics on this laptop?

I can only run the bios diagnostics, so that's a memory test and a full disc test. They worked fine. I cannot boot into any USB or disc image though.

I've just found the HP cloud recovery tool though. So I'm going to create a USB image from that and see if I have any joy. If that doesn't work I'll try upgrading the BIOS. Though I'm concerned I'll completely brick it if that goes wrong.

I suppose it is possible the BIOS chip has gone bad.

I'm coming to the same conclusion.

I tried to reflash the BIOS with various versions of BIOS +ve and -ve. BIOS updates failed as well! Used both Windows+V to clear then Windows+B to install. Installation of BIOS appears ok initially but verify step fails repeatedly. Eventually the BIOS update tool gives up after repeated write+verify attempts.

I've ordered  a new motherboard. The fact I can't even upgrade BIOS or save any BIOS state is leading me to believe something has failed in BIOS circuitry or BIOS has been locked some how.
