Installing ubuntu on my 850. Have tried all three options of legacy, combo and efi. No matter what I do it will not boot without going through boot options.

At the best I got it to do the sequence shown in this thread page three:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-Notebooks/Elitebook-840-G2-can-t-boot-Legacy-Linux-HDD/td-p/6...

Which is just ludicrous.

I have made a custom boot and tried

/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi

and

/boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi

but all to no avail.

(Most frustrating is when it seems to be going to do something useful then it does system reset and starts again!)

Unfortunately, you did not make the best choice for a Linux friendly notebook.

Even if it works, not all of the features of the notebook will since there is no Linux support for it.

Have you disabled secure boot and other Windows security features?

I chose a Dell notebok for my Linux machine and  have been very happy with it.

Recently I have been looking at HP's premium tier HP ZBook g5/g6/g7 and g8 series notebooks. They are Linux friendly and with the exception of the G8 are available at roughly the same price point as the  HP Pro series.

The Zbook g5 and g6 notebook have recently dropped to very reasonable prices in the refurbished/used notebook market.

Thanks for the reply. You are probably right. What I find infuriating is that the G1 works just fine. And I got a G3 to work after some messing about. But not the G2.

I have disable secure boot, or it would not work at all. I have gone through all the settings and made it as plain vanilla as I can. If you know of any setting that might be worth looking at specifically that would be a help. Maybe I missed something.

(This all started because the G1 i7s I have really do not work! The problem is the driver for the amd gpu is hopeless. So I have been looking for alternatives. G1 i5s are no problem. And I bough the G2 so as to avoid this problem, and ran into this BIOS nonsense. And the G3 i7 is ok because it only has the standard gpu on the chip. Hey ho!)
