HP Notebook - 17-by0320ng
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello!

HP offers a BIOS update (version F.73 Rev.A, sp154735.exe) for my older laptop (HP Notebook – 17-by0320ng).

It's not possible to install this update.

Why are updates offered on the HP support page if they are not installable?

Thank you.

Hi @Me082021,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand that you have an HP Notebook – 17-by0320ng, and HP shows a BIOS update (F.73 Rev.A, sp154735.exe). However, you can’t get the update to install, which raises the question of why HP lists updates that don’t seem installable.

Check Current BIOS Version

Press F10 during startup → enter BIOS setup.

Confirm the current BIOS version. If it’s already F.73 (or newer, depending on release timing), the installer will refuse to run.

Windows Version Compatibility

The installer package (sp154735.exe) is designed for specific Windows versions (usually Windows 10 64-bit).

If you’re running Windows 11 or another OS, the executable may not launch correctly. In that case, you can:

Run the installer in Windows 10 compatibility mode.

Or, extract the BIOS update files and use them with HP BIOS Update utility.

Create a BIOS Recovery USB

Download the update file from HP’s site.

Run the .exe on any Windows 10 machine (it will unpack into C:\SWSetup\SP154735).

Copy the BIOS .bin or .fd file to a FAT32 USB stick.

Boot the HP laptop with the USB plugged in → press Win + B (or Win + V) while powering on to start BIOS recovery.

Region & Model Restrictions

HP sometimes bundles BIOS updates for a family of models, but certain configurations won’t accept them.

Verify your exact product number (on the bottom of the laptop or in BIOS) matches those listed in the update’s release notes.

Why HP Still Lists It

HP posts updates for the entire product series, even if your unit doesn’t need it.

Updates can be rejected if your laptop:

Already has the update,

Uses a board revision not affected by the fix,

Or runs an unsupported OS.

Try running the installer on a clean Windows 10 install (even from a temporary bootable drive).

If the update still won’t apply, then your specific model revision doesn’t require it, which is why the installer blocks.

I hope this helps.

Hello!

Thank you very much for the answer.

Where can I find the release notes for the BIOS update?

HP Recommended

Hi @Me082021,

You’re welcome, I’m glad the information was helpful!

The release notes for HP BIOS updates are usually included in the SoftPaq description file on the same page where you download the update:

Go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.

Enter your exact product name or number (HP Notebook – 17-by0320ng).

Locate the BIOS update (e.g., F.73 Rev.A, sp154735.exe).

Click the “Details” or “More info” link next to the download.

This expands the description, version history, fixes, and enhancements, these are the release notes.

Additionally, once you download the update file, you’ll see a folder created under C:\SWSetup\SP154735. Inside, there’s often a text file (Readme.txt or ReleaseNotes.html) with the full details.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

In the folder C:\SWSetup\SP154735 are no release notes.

But if I use the HP Support Assistant I get the message that the support for my laptaop is expired since may 2025 so that the BIOS update is no more installable.
