I'm trying to make my laptop boot from a USB drive but although I can change the boot order on screen in the F10 menu, the default setting of the onboard OS (Windows 10 Home) seems to take precedence. How do I disable the Secure Boot utility if that's what is bypassing the USB, and /or change the BIOS defaults so that the computer does what I want, not what is decreed by the Microsoft gnomes?

Hi:

You may have to enable legacy mode and disable secure boot in order to boot from a USB flash drive on some models.

See this link for the settings to change...

https://www.support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03736054/

After you make those changes, have the flash drive in the USB port, turn on or restart the PC.

Tap the ESC key at the beginning of the HP welcome screen to get the menu of options.

Select the F9 boot options menu, and from that, select the legacy USB diskette on key/USB flash drive, and press the enter key.

The PC should boot from the flash drive.

That would be the only suggestion I can offer.
