HP Notebook
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I forgot my sign in password and can't get into the laptop at all.  I have work around software that should work to reset the password - I have to boot the laptop from a USB stick to use it.  I'm in InsydeH20 Setup Utility - System Configuration - Boot Options.  Legacy Support is Disabled, Secure Boot is Enabled.  Under UEFI Boot Order I have USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Drive first in the list with 5 other options.  Network Adaptor option has an ! by it so I understand that not to work.  Beside OS Boot Manager there is an arrow.  That appears to make it the default boot even though it's not first in the boot order and I can't figure out how to change that.  If the system booted first to the USB Diskette a window from the software on it should pop up - that doesn't happen - it just keeps booting in the normal way.  I spent about 2 hours playing with this so far learning all the stuff I wrote above - pretty proud of myself!!  Not having a clue what the hell I'm doing.  Please help if you can - please don't be too technical.  How can I get this machine to go right to booting off the USB stick??

Hi:

Go into the BIOS, enable legacy mode and disable secure boot.

See this link for the settings to change...

https://www.support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03736054/

You don't need to change the boot order.

Have your USB flash drive in the PC, turn it on, or restart it.

Tap the ESC key at the beginning of the HP welcome screen to get the menu of options.

Select the F9 boot options menu, and from that, select the legacy USB flash drive, and press the Enter key.

Then PC should then boot from the flash drive.

Paul!!! You're the man!  That worked - thank you!

Two questions:

1) should I change back any of the BIOS settings?  If so, to what?  I'd prefer to boot from the OS and not the USB stick so if I change that back how do I do it and will it cause any issues?  FYI - I deleted the sign in password.

2) the sole purpose I use this computer is to post Craigslist ads - so I want to have it running almost all the time, not get Windows updates and not restart.  My understanding from a little research is that MS has set things up with Win 10 that to make that VERY difficult.  I found a few work arounds but not sure how they'll work.  Thoughts?

If #2 is a better topic for a different forum please let me know which one and I'll post it there.  Thanks again for your help!!!

You're very welcome.

You can leave the BIOS settings as they are, and the notebook will boot from the hard drive anyway (if you have the HDD listed as the first legacy boot device), or you can change them back to the original settings (Legacy mode disabled, Secure Boot enabled).

I suggest you start a new topic regarding the updates.

I have no experience with turning off the whole W10 update system.

I always let WU install whatever it wants to install.

If something causes my PC to have issues (which I only had happen once in the last 3 years on one of my 5 PC's), I use the hide windows update utility to prevent the problematic update from installing again.
