I have an infected HP Laptop 17-cn0023dx. All the virus and malware programs on it message 'not supported in Windows version' or something close to that.

I have an external CDROM unit and Norton Bootable Recovery Tool ISO file burned to a DVD.

I have been able to get to the bios setup utility and tried to change the boot order to USB CD/DVD ROM drive. When I select the option, hit F10 to save changes and exit, it boots to the C: drive.Doesn't seem to retain the USB CD/DVD option on save.

What do I have to do different to boot from the External DVD ISO file. FYI, there is a EFI  folder - Boot directory  and includes boot.conf and boot.efi files.

@finally-Ret,

You can try this:

1. Get into F10 BIOS Setup -> Boot Options or Boot Configurations and make sure that USB boot option is enabled. Also, disable secure boot option and save and exit.

2. The black screen will appear prompting you to enter 4-digit numbers to confirm your action. Just type the numbers and click enter to restart the laptop. Shut it down and connect the USB DVD drive to the laptop.

3. Restart and tap F9 repeatedly for Boot Menu option. If you see your USB external DVD drive, click it to launch the recovery tool. If you don't see the external drive, click Boot from EFI File. If you see a file system of the external drive that looks like a huge string of numbers and characters, maybe you can manually boot into the DVD drive from there. Post back with a screenshot of the file system.

Did you try my suggestions?

Not yet. I had two errands to run. Just in between them. Will try after the next one. Will let you know. Thanks.

I have tried your suggestion. I can get to the EFI boot menu but the external boot is not available. I am going to copy the EFI folder from Norton to a DVD and try to boot off of that. I will let you know.

In your first instruction you tell me to make sure that USB option is enabled. I have tried to select that option but the check icon always points to the OS Boot Manager. I can not get the arrow to point to the USB CD/CDROM option. I have tried highlighting it by using the F5 F6 key and when highlighted pressed F10 to save the changes. But nothing changes. What do I need to do to actually make the USC CD/CDROM the active selection?

I was able to change the boot to USB.....

But it did boot to the USB CD/CDROM after booting. The arrow continues to point to the OS boot. Should I reset to factory settings and then try again?

Didn't work.
