HP Chromebook x360 - 14-da0012dx
Chrome OS

HP Chromebook x360  (14-da0012dx) will not shut down on the first attempt (it never has). When I close all apps and windows and choose 'Shut Down' one of the following scenarios occurs:

-Shuts down, but after the power goes off it comes right back on, boots back up and shows the user login screen

-Shuts down but does NOT power off, instead the screen is blank/black screen (the screen powers off, but the power light on the power button remains on, and sometimes the fan sound becomes loud and does not stop)

-Shuts down and powers off, but if I close the lid, it boots back up immediately, powers on, and shows the user login screen (the fan is very loud!)

-Shuts down and powers off, but if I leave the lid open, it boots back up, powers on, and shows the user login screen (the fan is very loud!)

This shutdown issue still occurs with the power cord connected AND without the power cord connected.

It also still happens even if I do not have my Logitech wireless dongle plugged in (for my keyboard and mouse). I have experienced the issue with the dongle plugged in AND not plugged in.

In order to ensure the Chromebook remains OFF when I shut it down, I need to do a hardware reset (hold refresh arrow and press power button). This reboots the Chromebook and brings me back to the user login screen. I press the 'Shut Down' option to try to power down the Chromebook again (and sometimes I need to do this MULTIPLE times before it stays off).

I have troubleshot the above many times (power cord, dongle, closing the Chromebook in a specific timing VS leaving it open, and all sorts of combinations and timing) and the number of times it takes to shut down the Chromebook seems random.

This has been a recurring issue with this Chromebook since I first purchased it, however, I used to be able to do only one hard reset and close the lid at the perfect timing after choosing shut down to ensure it would stay off. This sometimes still happens, but not often enough to keep dealing with it.

Recently, the issue has just gotten to me because sometimes it requires many more times of hard resetting to get it to power off, and sometimes it doesn't shut off (more on this below) which becomes quite frustrating.

I have not made any recent changes to the computer, including installing new apps or browser extensions, and this shouldn't matter per se because it has always done this.

Also, a side note on sleep settings: I had to toggle 'OFF' (I think it's the 'Never' option) the sleep on lid close or idle options in settings (plugged in and unplugged) because the Chromebook would freeze with a black screen and not recover, or would restart on its own. So these options are not enabled (I have tried turning them on, in all different combinations to see if it would affect the ability to shut down and power off the Chromebook, but that only made things worse).

There have been occasions where the Chromebook will keep turning on and off on its own when I "shut it down" and nothing I attempt works (lid closed OR open, doesn't matter, plugged in or not, wireless Logitech dongle in or not). It just boots up and shuts down over and over (boot loop?). I had to place it into my closet so the battery would drain because no amount of hard resets and shutdowns powered it off!

I have not yet done a POWERWASH, but again, this issue has occurred since I first got the Chromebook (before installing ANY Chrome extensions or apps). It just didn't feel like a big deal to me at the time for some reason. I thought maybe an update would resolve it. Alas, here I am almost 2 years later and the issue still persists, and my device is fully updated.

Please let me know if there is another solution. If I powerwash and the issue still persists, what can I do? Is this a known issue for others? If you are reading this and have the same issue, please say so and let HP know, too. I feel like if this was a PC we could upgrade the hardware or check the BIOS and resolve this, right?

I would love to trade this Chromebook in for credit but HP doesn't seem to offer this service and elsewhere it's only worth around $26 despite spending $440 on it when it was on sale (it was originally $600). Any solutions are welcome (outside of what I have already mentioned, please).

Thank you so much!
