Compaq CQ58-251SU Cannot boot from usb

HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello

I have Compaq CQ58-251SU and I would like to format the hard disk and install Windows 10 from scratch. (currently have Win 10 running)

I have a bootable USB key-stick created with the Microsoft's Media Creation Tool.

I have changed the boot order in the BIOS (F10) - to USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk first both on UEFI and Legacy mode

The BIOS has the default setup - UEFI mode, Legacy support enabled,  Secure boot disabled, version F.29

When I put the usb stick and turn on the pc I get a black screen instad of the expected Win 10 Installer window.

What could be the problem ?

Hi @WillNeverBuyHP

Welcome to the HP Forums!

It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are unable to boot from the USB drive to reinstall the Windows on your computer.

I’d love to help!

Follow below steps to boot the computer from the USB flash driver.

Turn on the computer and immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu opens. Press F9 to open the Boot Device Options menu. Use the up or down arrow key to select the USB drive, and then press Enter. The computer starts Windows.

Let me know how it goes and you have a good day ahead.

Take care!

Cheers!

Thank you @, your post was helpful!

I would like to mention a couple of points here :

1. It would never cross my mind to open F9 and select boot options on start when I have already changed the boot order in the Boot options menu in the BIOS and saved that order... Expected behaviour is once changed the option slected first to boot first... but HP twekaed that Insyde BIOS way too much??.

2. Following your steps once pressed F9 USB device was not present as option. I had only Boot from EFI File or Notebook Hard Drive. From here the steps are: Once reached F9 Boot options menu -> put the flash drive into the USB slot -> select Boot from EFI file -> in the File Explorer the USB will be visible, select it -> bootmgr.efi

NOTE:  If the Legacy support option in the BIOS is disabled , point 2 will not be possible.

Cheers!
