Hi @Kazzie2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your notebook is stuck in a loop during Windows installation with the message “The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed.” Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and get the installation moving again.

Restart and try the automatic fix
Click OK to let the system restart.
If the same message immediately returns, continue with the steps below.

Use the keyboard shortcut to bypass the loop
When the error message is on the screen, press Shift + F10.
This should open a black Command Prompt window.

Open the Registry Editor
In the Command Prompt, type regedit and press Enter.
This allows us to correct a setup value that commonly causes this loop.

Navigate to the setup status key
In Registry Editor, go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ Setup \ Status \ ChildCompletion

Change the setup value
On the right side, double-click setup.exe.
Change the value from 1 to 3, then click OK.

Close everything and restart
Close Registry Editor and the Command Prompt.
Click OK on the error message or restart the computer.

Allow Windows setup to continue
After restarting, Windows should move past the error screen.
Let the installation complete without interrupting it.

If the shortcut does not open Command Prompt
Power the notebook off.
Turn it on and interrupt startup 2–3 times to force Windows Recovery, then choose Continue installation or Startup Repair if available.

Keep the notebook plugged in
Make sure the charger stays connected during setup.
Power interruptions can cause this error to repeat.

I hope this helps.
