HP ENVY x360 13.3 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 13-bf0000 (552D7AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi everyone! My laptop has been freezing up every hour or 2 for the past couple of days. I've done all the updates, checked the systems and software and everything is correct. It started when I was using google chrome, then chrome stopped working in general, so I tried to uninstall it, but it says, "can't be found...", even though I can still see the app. I started using Microsoft edge, but it still freezes up.

I'm started college in a week, and I would really love to have this figured out before then.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

p.s The laptop doesn't overheat when it freezes, but there's a whirling noise coming from the front 2 speakers on the bottom.

Hi @Fadila1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’re dealing with a frustrating issue, especially with college starting soon. Here are some steps to help troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the freezing problem with your HP ENVY x360.

Check for Malware:

  • Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or another reputable antivirus program to rule out any malware that could be causing the freezing.

Update Drivers:

  • Ensure that all your drivers are up to date. Go to the Device Manager, right-click on key components like the graphics card and network adapter, and select “Update driver.”

Check for Hardware Issues:

  • The whirling noise could be a sign of a hardware issue. Run a diagnostic test using HP’s built-in tools. You can access these by pressing F2 or F10 during startup.

Check System Resources:

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check if any processes are consuming excessive CPU, memory, or disk usage when the freezing occurs.

Reinstall Problematic Software:

  • For the Google Chrome issue, try removing it completely. Use the built-in Windows tool for removing applications and check for any leftover files in the Program Files folder. After that, reinstall Chrome if needed.

System File Check:

  • Run a system file check to repair any corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command sfc /scannow.

Check Event Viewer:

  • Open Event Viewer (search for it in the Start menu) and look for any critical errors or warnings that correspond with the times your laptop freezes. This might give you more insight into the problem.

Perform a Clean Boot:

  • Boot your laptop in a clean state to see if a startup program or service is causing the issue. Type msconfig in the Start menu search, go to the Services tab, check "Hide all Microsoft services," and then disable all remaining services. Restart your computer and see if the issue persists.

Update BIOS:

  • Check HP’s support website for any BIOS updates for your laptop model. Sometimes, BIOS updates can resolve stability issues.

Perform a System Restore:

  • If the problem started recently, you might be able to resolve it by restoring your system to a point before the issue began. Search for “System Restore” in the Start menu and follow the prompts.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
