HP Laptop 17-cp0155ng (4H3N2EA)

Does the HP-17-cp0155ng laptop (also the 17-cp3287ng) have a CMOS battery or is the BIOS powered by the laptop-battery?
Is it a CR2032 battery or another size or a soldered battery unit and where can I find this installed?

If there is no battery installed, how can I permanently install the BIOS (I have already tried HP instructions)?
My laptop has a black screen since a HP driver update. Attempts to update the BIOS (USB flash drive with current BIOS from the HP driver page) fail. There are only error messages (BIOS Recovery 500) and (CMOS Reset 502) or "The BIOS recovery files cannot found or the files are corrupted".

Than you very much for your reply.

You may need an older bios.  Download F.28 which is the last BIOS that actually fixed anything.

Run the install and create a USB boot flash.  Make sure the flash has LED lights.

To install from USB.
When you power up your system the LEDs on the flash drive should flash once at the instant power is applied. They will then flash about three to five seconds later (hopefully). When they flash a second time that means the files are being read from the flash drive. If you never see it flash a second time then the boot loader is damaged and you cannot recover the bios unless you use a programming tool or replace the chip. You hold down the Windows key + B key when powering up with the USB flash inserted.

Then try a hard reset:  Hold down the power on button for 20 seconds.

Let me know what happens.

Hello Beemer Biker,

thank you very much for your reply and explanation.

I downloaded the BIOS drivers on my new HP laptop (17-cp3278ng) and created the USB flash driver for the defective HP laptop:
After entering the laptop model (HP Laptop 17-cp0155ng 4H3N2EA) at the HP-Support-Site, I found two BIOS updates in the device drivers:
a) F.31 Rev.A from Oct 28.2024 sp155554.exe and
b) F.12 Rev.A from Oct 17, 2021 sp135776.exe.
An old BIOS that you called F.28 was not offered for my laptop model, only F.12 (old) and F.31 (new).

If I start the latest BIOS a) from the download folder, the inserted USB stick is formatted as a BIOS flash drive during the program run and the BIOS files are generated and transferred. The USB stick lights up. If I swap the USB stick into an USB slot on the defective laptop and start the laptop with Win+B and the power button, the USB stick also flashes (boot loader is OK). Then the BIOS screen appears: “The System BIOS is being recovered … Writing new BIOS Image”, then “Verifying new BIOS Image” followed by “The System BIOS recovery is complete” with “Continue Startup”. Another screen follows with “The System BIOS Pending Image is being cleared … Clearing Pending Image”. Contrary to the HP YouTube video, the block and progress display of the clearing process is not shown. However, the subsequent screen is again identical: “A System BIOS Recovery has occurred. BIOS Recovery (500) – Enter – Continue Startup”. After pressing Enter, the screen disappears, Windows 11 is not loaded or started, the display remains black as usual.

If I start the older BIOS b), I get error screens: “A driver cannot be loaded on this device. Driver amifldrv64.sys" from the program compatibility assistant. So I can't start or open the older BIOS update or the BIOS recovery tool to create a USB flash drive with version F.12. I also tried this on a Win10 laptop, but here too the BIOS recovery tool does not open to create the USB flash drive.

What can I do now?

By the way: I also found other users on the Internet whose laptops had been "killed" by an HP firmware update. HP support only offers a repair outside of the warranty period for 490 euros. But if an HP update destroys the HP laptop, then HP should take responsibility for it...

Best wishes to you.

:That is strange.  The us-en site has 11 bios from F.13 to F.31 but no F.12

Version:  F.28 Rev.A  Fixed in this release: - Fixes an intermittent issue where the acoustic sound from the system is not stable.

Try the win-b again and then the win-v  cmos reset.

You can replace the bios, replace the motherboard or possibly program the chip using a 341 programming tool.
(this tutorial might be useful). The tools to flash are discussed below and an HP bios flash is discussed here

good luck!
My bios programming experience dates to when all motherboard had socketed ROM bios.

Let me know if you are considering replacing the bios chip.
