OS: Windows 11

Victus Gaming Laptop 15-fb0002na (6POW4EA)

Product 6POW4EA

Problem: Used laptop as usual nothing feels wrong, than power off it, and after half an hour open it again and see SMART Hard disk error (hard disk 1 301) . I performed hp diagnostics and it shows:

Testing Drive: 1

Hard Drive/SSD SMART Check : FAILED

SSD Wear Check: PASSED

HDD/SSD 1: SSD WDC PC SN730 SDBPNTY-512G-1006 wear level is 6%, remaining life 94%

FAILURE ID: 04NJKR-B96CQG-MFPX1F-60D503

On the next screen after this blue message was Windows boot manager window with next text:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

  1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
  2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
  3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: LEFT\Microsoft\Boot\BCD

Status: 0x0000185

Info: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains

errors.

Add some POV, i didn’t do anything unusual before this, just installed to do program from Windows Store. And maybe half year ago had a blue window telling my pc locked with BitLocker and I can find the key on my Microsoft Account, i searched and put this key, then everything was as normal.

Additional thoughts: I found blog page of one man that had the same problem. Iwondering maybe in my case it has a link.

The text from his blog:

To copy my personal data I connected a disk (Samsung EVO 860) to another PC and decoded it(because I used BitLocker). After the disk is back in place my Windows 10 started without any troubles. I don't know what it was - fortuity or a bug, but it helps me.

But what was the core of the issue?

Reviewing Event Log I found that seconds before the windows crash FilterManager register warning #4

File System Filter 'wcifs' (Version 10.0, ‎‎2018‎-‎03‎-‎02T11:23:20.000000000Z) failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy3'. The filter returned a non-standard final status of 0xC000000D.  This filter and/or its supporting applications should handle this condition.  If this condition persists, contact the vendor.

Also a day before I installed Windows Store and and Neat Office (because it was free).
I have no idea what fexactly it was. At the moment my PC working fine, but the disk is not encrypted by BitLocker.

@yrickman, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

Based on your description, your Victus Gaming Laptop 15-fb0002na (Product ID: 6POW4EA) is experiencing two critical issues:

  1. SMART Hard Disk Error (301)
  2. Windows Boot Error 0xc0000185 – BCD (Boot Configuration Data) missing or corrupted

Diagnosis Summary:

  • HP UEFI Diagnostics shows:
    • SMART Check: FAILED
    • SSD Wear Level: 6% (Remaining Life: 94%)
    • Failure ID: 04NJKR-B96CQG-MFPX1F-60D503
  • SSD Model: WDC PC SN730 SDBPNTY-512G-1006

Recommended Steps to Resolve:

Step 1: Backup Your Data Immediately

Even though wear level is low, SMART failure indicates potential imminent drive failure. If the system still allows booting via recovery or external tools, back up your data ASAP.

You can use:

Step 2: Attempt BCD Repair (if SSD is still accessible)

If the SSD is still partially functional, try repairing the Boot Configuration Data:

  1. Create a Windows 11 installation USB using Microsoft Media Creation Tool.
  2. Boot from the USB.
  3. Choose Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt.
  4. Run the following commands:
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /rebuildbcd
  5. Restart and check if Windows boots.

Step 3: Replace the SSD

Since SMART has failed, even if BCD is repaired, the SSD is unreliable. You should replace it with a compatible NVMe SSD.

  • After replacement, reinstall Windows using the USB created in Step 2.

Step 4: Optional – Disable BitLocker Before Replacing SSD

If BitLocker was previously enabled, ensure you have the recovery key saved from your Microsoft account: https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey

Before replacing the SSD, decrypt the drive if possible:

manage-bde -status

manage-bde -off C:

Additional Insight:

The blog you referenced suggests a possible link between Windows Store apps and FilterManager warnings. While speculative, it's possible that a faulty app or shadow copy interaction triggered corruption. However, the SMART failure is hardware-level and not caused by software.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!

Hi Max, im appreciated your time taken to respond to my question, have couple of further question. I created a bootable pendrive with Win 11, but if i install Repair tool on this pendrive, it will delete all boot files, yes? I have only one usb stick. And the second question, i bought this laptop with Win 11 already installed on it, any chances to get my license back to new hard disk?

@yrickman, You're very welcome! I'm glad to help. Let's go through your two follow-up questions carefully:

Will installing the Windows Repair Tool on my bootable USB delete the boot files?

No, it won’t delete your bootable USB files if you use it correctly.

Here’s how it works:

  • If you've already created a Windows 11 installation USB using the Media Creation Tool, it already includes the repair tools.
  • You don’t need to install anything extra on the USB. Just boot from it and choose:
    • Repair your computerTroubleshootAdvanced OptionsStartup Repair or Command Prompt (for BCD fix).

So you can safely use your single USB stick for both Windows installation and repair without losing any boot files.

Can I recover my Windows 11 license after replacing the SSD?

Yes, you absolutely can recover your Windows 11 license. Here's why:

  • Your laptop came with Windows 11 pre-installed, which means it uses a digital license tied to your motherboard.
  • When you replace the SSD and reinstall Windows 11, the activation will happen automatically once you're online.

Steps to ensure activation:

  1. Install Windows 11 using your USB.
  2. Skip entering a product key during setup.
  3. Once installation is complete and you're connected to the internet, Windows will activate automatically.

You can verify activation by going to: SettingsSystemActivation

Bonus Tip: Link your license to your Microsoft account

If you haven’t already, it’s a good idea to link your Windows license to your Microsoft account. This makes future recovery even easier.

Go to: SettingsAccountsYour Info
Make sure it says "Signed in with a Microsoft account"

I hope this helps!

Sounds good, i’ve tried to use bootable usb to repair but when I select the efi file, there is the window telling to choose what driver to install, and the huge title “Install driver to show the hardware”

HP Recommended

@yrickman, Thanks for the update! That “Install driver to show the hardware” message usually appears when the Windows installer or recovery environment can’t detect your internal SSD, which is likely due to:

  • The SSD being corrupted or failed (as SMART check already failed).
  • Missing or incompatible storage controller drivers (especially for NVMe SSDs).
  • BitLocker encryption interfering with detection.

Let’s walk through how to resolve this:

Option 1: Try a Different USB Port

  • Use a USB 2.0 port (if available) instead of USB 3.0/3.1.
  • Avoid using USB hubs or extension cables.

Option 2: Load Storage Drivers Manually

If the SSD isn’t detected, you can manually load the storage controller driver:

On another working PC, go to HP’s support page for your model: Official HP® Support

Download the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) or AMD RAID driver (depending on your system, Victus models often use AMD).

Extract the driver to a separate folder on your USB stick.

When you see the “Install driver” screen:

  • Click Browse and point to the folder containing the extracted driver.
  • Select the appropriate .inf file and load it.

This should allow Windows Setup to detect the SSD.

BitLocker Consideration

If BitLocker was enabled, the SSD might be encrypted. If the drive is still accessible, you’ll need the recovery key (which you already have) to unlock it.

If the SSD is not detected even after loading drivers, it’s likely the SSD has failed and needs replacement. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: HP® Service Center Locator - United Kingdom | HP® Support
(Select the country from the dropdown menu and enter the city name or pincode)

I hope this helps!

Soo, i’ve replaced the ssd, install from pendrive Win10 (Win11 unable because of “install drive to show the hardware” issue. But on win 10 i realised that  in Device Manager the microsoft basic display adapter, generic bluetooth adapter, all in “other devices” with ! markjust after launching, the first visible are no bluetooth and wifi options. I tried to search for drivers but hp not offer them for Win10, drivers for win11 not supported. I’m wondering if I can download with ethernet or pendrive win 11 installation assistant and install it not exiting the system (not from bios). Any suggestions for me?
