Hi, my laptop needs restarting completely every time it goes into sleep or hibernate mode. The power button is lit but pressing any key or the power button doesn't start the computer. I have to hold the power key until it turns off, then press it again to start up the laptop. I've run the fast and extended diagnostics (all passed) and all the updates are done. This happens regardless of whether the laptop is running on battery or plugged in.
Thanks for your help.

Hi @JulJul1
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
That sounds frustrating, especially since you've already run diagnostics and installed updates. Here are some steps to troubleshoot the sleep/hibernate issue on your HP Envy x360 16-ad0000:
Troubleshooting Steps
Step 1: Adjust Power Settings
- Open Control Panel > Power Options.
- Click Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Disable Fast Startup and save changes.
Step 2: Update Graphics & Chipset Drivers
- Visit HP’s support page and download the latest BIOS, chipset, and GPU drivers.
- Install them and restart your laptop.
- If the issue persists, try rolling back the GPU driver to a previous version.
Step 3: Modify Sleep Mode Settings
- Open Settings > System > Power & Sleep.
- Click Additional power settings.
- Select Change plan settings for your active power plan.
- Click Change advanced power settings.
- Expand Sleep > Allow hybrid sleep and set it to Off.
Step 4: Run Windows Troubleshooter
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot.
- Select Other Troubleshooters.
- Run the Power Troubleshooter.
Step 5: Check External Display Behavior
- If the issue does not occur on an external monitor, the problem may be with the internal display or GPU drivers.
Let me know what results you get, and I can refine the approach further! Hopefully, we can get your laptop running smoothly again.

Thanks, @Hawks_Eye. Step 1 didn't make a difference; in Step 2 I managed to do the BIOS update but still no change; downloaded the Graphics driver but again no change, and I couldn't find the Chipset Driver. In Step 3, the 'hybrid sleep' isn't supported anyway. Step 4 made no difference. Not sure how I can check for Step 5.
Basically, my laptop turns off instead of going into Sleep mode. Other than making my computer never go to sleep, I don't know what to do.
Thanks for your help!

It sounds frustrating to have your HP Envy x360 shutting down instead of properly entering sleep mode, especially after multiple troubleshooting attempts. Since you've already updated the BIOS and graphics drivers but haven't seen improvements, here are some further steps :
1. Check Power Management Settings for Devices
Since this issue may relate to how the system handles power for critical hardware components:
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and Keyboards.
- Right-click each device, go to Properties, and under the Power Management tab, uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer" where applicable.
- Restart and test sleep mode.
2. Confirm HP Battery and Power Management Settings
- Open HP Support Assistant (if installed) and check for power management recommendations specific to your model.
- Ensure HP Power Manager (if applicable) is installed and running.
3. Adjust Hibernation Behavior Using Command Prompt
If sleep mode keeps acting like a shutdown, adjusting hibernation settings may help:
- Open Command Prompt (Admin).
- Type: powercfg /hibernate off and press Enter.
- Restart your system and try putting it to sleep.
4. Test Sleep Mode with Minimal Background Processes
- Open Task Manager > Startup tab.
- Disable non-essential startup programs.
- Restart and test sleep mode.
5. Run HP’s Hardware Diagnostics for Power Issues
HP has built-in hardware diagnostics that include power management tests:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press and hold Esc, then power on the device.
- Select F2 for system diagnostics.
- Run the Battery and Power Management Tests and review the results.
If sleep mode still causes shutdowns, disabling it entirely might be the best workaround. Let me know if you’d like additional guidance.
