Peace all,

I was working with Ableton Live, connected to Wifi, today when a blue screen with ":( Your PC has encountered a problem and needs to restart" with immediate shut-down, but was able to reboot with no problems. I had experienced that only once before months ago and had since updated my OS. Everything went smoothly for about a month after that update, but I believe I was due for another update-- I don't recall which one it was.

About an hour of successful use of my computer after the blue screen crash, the screen went black and no buttons worked, not even a hard reset (held power for 10ish seconds, but hard drive kept spinning and all LED lights remained on). I unplugged all USB connections but kept the AC adapter plugged in.

I left it for a while and came back to no LED lights, not even the amber/white charging light. I tried another adapter I had on hand but that's not the problem. Hours later, I do feel the computer to be slightly warm, so I assume the battery is charging, but it simply does not boot nor show any signs of life. I've tried holding the power button and trying to boot while holding f11, escape, nothing has worked.

Please help! I am a few months past the warranty expiration but I purchased this machine less than 1.5 years ago.

@mflowers11, thanks for your quick response and time.

I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.

As you mentioned you need to know how to remove the battery on your laptop.

Please try the steps recommended below.

Before removing the battery, follow these steps: 1. Turn oƫ the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is oƫ or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.

2. Disconnect the power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from the computer.

3. Disconnect all external devices from the computer.

4. Remove the top cover (see Top cover on page 27). Remove the battery: WARNING! To reduce potential safety issues, use only the battery provided with the computer, a replacement battery provided by HP, or a compatible battery purchased from HP. 1. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board (1). 2. Remove the four Phillips PM2.5×4.0 screws (2) that secure the battery to the computer. 3. Disconnect the USB/card reader board cable from the system board (3) and the USB/card reader board (3), and then (if replacing the battery) remove the cable from atop the battery. NOTE: If replacing the battery, be sure to replace the USB/card reader board cable.

Hi! @mflowers11, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!

I understand you have issues powering on your laptop.

Don't worry I'd like to help you out.

Did you make any hardware or software changes on your PC?

Try plugging the adapter into a different wall outlet and check if it helps.

Please try the steps recommended below.

To perform a power reset on a laptop with a removable battery, use the following steps:
Turn off the computer.
Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.
Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.
Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.
Remove the battery from the battery compartment.
With the battery and power cord unplugged, press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual electrical charge from the capacitors.
Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the laptop, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.
Press the Power button to turn on the computer.
If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, and then press the Enter key.
After Windows opens, reconnect each peripheral device that was disconnected, one device at a time, until all devices are reconnected.
Your laptop has been reset. After a power reset, it is a good idea to run Windows Update and HP Support Assistant to update all device drivers.

Also, refer this article to further troubleshoot no power issues with your laptop.

Hey MrRobot, thank you for your kind response. As I mentioned I tried different adapters and different outlets, that is not the issue. Also, my laptop has a built-in battery. I am willing to disassemble my computer to try the battery but I do not know how. Please advise!

Hey MrRobot, thanks for these more detailed instructions and link to the PDF. This weekend I followed the instructions to open up my laptop and remove the battery, and since I did not have another on hand I simply closed it back up and powered up with the AC adapter. Happy to report that my computer is up and running as normal. As soon as I booted it up, it took me through about an hour of updates... But all is well.

Not sure if the battery was shorted by something or just faulty, now I just have to buy a new one, is it possible to have HP parts shipped to Chile? Thanks again for your help, this was a life saver.
