I ran two software updates this morning: Intel Software Component 2316.5.1.12 and HP Software Component 1.67.3794.0. This afternoon I tried to turn my laptop off and it would not turn off; I held the power button for 5 seconds, 10 seconds, nothing. Then I saw a member comment in the community forum that suggested holding the buitton for 60 seconds; that finally worked. I don't know if the updates were responsible for this problem, but all of the HP responses to "my computer won't turn off" only talk about holding the power button down for 5 seconds. Obviously that is not the only solution, at least in mine and one other case!

Hi @pondviewer16,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to experience your HP Envy x360 not shutting off properly after the software updates. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue.
Perform a Hard Reset: Since holding the power button for an extended period (60 seconds) helped in turning off the laptop, this suggests a hard reset might be needed. Here’s how you can do it:
- Disconnect all external devices (like USB drives, printers, etc.) from the laptop.
- Hold down the power button for about 60 seconds to drain any residual power.
- After this, try powering on the laptop normally and see if it shuts down correctly.
Check Power Settings: Sometimes, power settings or configurations can affect how the laptop shuts down. Ensure your power settings are configured correctly:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options (or search for "Power Options" in the Start menu).
- Check the settings under "Choose what the power buttons do" and ensure they are set to your preferences.
Update Drivers: Since you recently updated Intel and HP software components, ensure all drivers are up to date:
- Go to Device Manager (search for it in the Start menu).
- Expand categories and look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark, indicating driver issues. Update these drivers if needed.
Check for BIOS Update: Sometimes, updating the BIOS can resolve power-related issues. Check HP’s official support website for your laptop model to see if there’s a BIOS update available.
System Restore: If the issue started right after the updates and troubleshooting doesn’t help, you might consider performing a System Restore to revert your system to a point before the updates were installed:
- Type "System Restore" in the Start menu and follow the prompts to restore your system.
These steps should help you diagnose and hopefully resolve the issue with your HP Envy x360 not shutting down properly.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
