HP Notebook PC (ID J8X12UA#ABA)

Trying to get past login screen but it keeps locking up, not sure what OS is currently installed. Was originally Win 8.1 but might have been upgraded to Win 10 (ver. ????). I ran the Diag. and keep getting error code: 90CDOX1-7B19P4-MFPV7F-60Woo3.

I tried to find answer on HP site/ Tech, then tried the virtual Agent (it is useful as otters on a Billy goat), even called tech support on phone; had perfect conversation up till I gave the ??Agent?? the error code - then poof he suddenly could not hear me on the phone any more (most likely the ??Agent?? could not understand English - get a lot of that foreign help because every tech support is no longer in America).

So if there is an AMERICAN HP employee out there that could answer my question would be very grateful.

Hi,

Well I am not American (Irish), nor a HP employee, but will try to help you.

The error code indicates that the Hard Drive has failed the hardware test

"Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure"

You will need to replace the Hard Drive and reinstall the OS. Here is a small guide:

you can use any 2.5" SATA3 Hard Drive (max 2TB because of the thickness of drive). You could also replace with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD (of your desired capacity) which would give a  boost to the everyday performance of the notebook.

Examples:

https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0784SLQM6/ref=sr_1_2?crid=184962H9H6KFC...

On page 44 of the service manual, you can see the steps to install the drive

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04763947

To install Windows again:

Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (different PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition. Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.

I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.

Iomar,

Thank you for the reply and the information on the error code. As you can tell by my posting I was pretty ticked off at HP Tech. Support and the Tech Support web site; why HP makes it difficult to get a simple answer is just down right anti-customer relations (IMHO), looking at it from a business point of view (I am a retired businessman).

The out burst about an American or HP employee was made not that I am against farming out Tec support, it was directed at the farming out to countries that do not or cannot understand English/American-English; or pull the stunt of not being able to hear the person on the phone when asked a question - I talk on the phone to family in Germany, Poland, Ireland, England,  those who are stationed in the Far East and Middle East without any problems . I felt I needed to explain why I stated what I did in my posting.

Again I thank you for the reply and information you provided, it helped me out alot. God Bless and God Speed
