I am trying to reinstall using the HP recovery media from Computer Surgeons.
I have changed the boot order in BIOS to access the cd-rom drive. I get the error message "Selected boot image did not authenticate. Press <ENTER> to continue" when trying to reinstall the OS (Windows 😎 from the recovery media.
If I try several times, it starts the HP recovery process and it completes the first step:
Reformatting the Windows Partition of the hard drive ---> completes this step
Copying files required to restore the hard drive ---> it gets stuck on this step @ 20% with the error message:
Reducer
Copy File Fails
From: E:\PRELOAD\BASE24.SWM
To: C:\RM\Image\BASE24.SWM
I have run UEFI diagnostics and SMART CHECK: Passed (takes about 15 minutes)
also ran LONG DST: Passed (this test took about 5.2 hours)
so the hard drive seems ok
Just in case though I bought a new mechanical hard drive, same size 1TB, and had the same problem, stuck at 20%, same error message
Any thoughts?
Thank you

Hi,
Welcome to the HP Support forum.
The error "Selected boot image did not authenticate" is related to Secure Boot and Legacy mode.
Please, enter BIOS (F10) and go to System configuration -> Boot options
- Disable Secure boot
- Enable Legacy mode (CSM mode)
Here are details:
Save the changes and exit BIOS
Make sure you boot from the recovery media using Esc / F9 - hitting it repeatedly during boot
The error copying the files from the media to the HDD is related to either HDD issues or the media issues
Since your diagnostics passed without errors, this is the media.
Please, reach to ComputerSurgeons > https://www.computersurgeons.com/t-contact.aspx
and ask them to send you replacement (new) media instead of these one which might be corrupted.
Let me know how it goes. Please, post back if any problems or qustions.

Thank you for your reply.
Disable secure boot worked perfectly to solve the first issue.
For the second issue I received a new recovery media set from computer surgeons but have the same problem but this time with disc 2 of 3. Similar error message.
I am under the impression the recovery media from computer surgeons is defective.
If I bought a new copy of windows 10 would I be able to install it on my computer?
It is a hp envy dv7t-7200 quad edition
Thanks for your help
Ps while at it, would I be able to install an ssd?

- corrupted recovery media (defective media)
or
- corrupted HDD
If the HDD tests pass, this is the recovery media. You will probably be able to install Windows 10 without any issues

but HP hasn't released drivers for Windows 10 for your PC and HP hasn't tested your PC with Windows 10. Because of that you might experience problems such as BSODs (sudden restarts) or some piece of hardware not working well. But these are just assumptions based on different models, I can't guarantee. It might, as well, work just fine.

Yes, sure. You can upgrade to an SSD. Actually, this is even recommended for better performance, speed, etc.
Just keep in mind that if you upgrade to an SSD and if you want to use HP Recovery media (such as those provided by ComputerSurgeons or directly from HP), the new SSD must be the same size and capacity as the initial original HDD, or bigger capacity. For example, if your currect HDD is with 500 GB capacity, the SSD must also be this capacity. Otherwise, the recovery medial will most likely fail to install due to requirements.
However, if you perform clean installation of Windows , there will be no problem
With regards to Windows 10:
Considering the existing situation, I believe you have nothing to loose. You can test Windows 10 now for free for 90 days and see on your own if the PC supports Windows 10.- Microsoft offers 90 day free evaluation copy >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsforbusiness/try
All that is needed from you is to register with Microsoft account, download the Windows ISO image and write it on a USB (make it bootable).
Here is an example (example is with Ubuntu but works the same way with Windows ISO). Use Rufus and the Windows 10 ISO.
* How to create bootable ISO on USB device >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows
Secure boot disabled, Legacy mode ON.
Using Rufus, select MBR partition.
Eventually, you need to boot the PC from Windows 10
When ready with the USB drive :
Please, shutdown the computer using the power button.
Insert the Windows USB thumdrive prepared previously
Power on the PC.
As soon as you press the power-on button, start hitting the Esc button repeatedly (like tap-tap-tap).
This should open a HP Startup Menu
Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the USB thumb drive as a boot option.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 10. Perform clean installation/custom installation (not repair).
Delete all existing partitions and install Windows on Disc 0 Unallocated space
- Post-installation, ensure your drivers are updates using the Device Manager method -> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139
Update all major componets and run Windows Update.
- Make sure Windows is Activated by going to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Activation
- You may wish to stop some of the Windows Telemetry by using free tools such as Spybot AntiBeacon or DWS Lite
You can test for about 90 days before you decide if you want to purchase a license and installation media, and reinstall a full version of Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro edition.
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes
