HP Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop PC 13t-aw200 CTO

The fan on my spectre X360 13t-aw200 periodically stops running and systems gets quite hot.  A hard reboot usually solves the issue.  I believe this problem has contributed to my battery swelling (which now needs to be replaced).

I wanted to try updating the bios.  However, only Windows 10 is supported by HP.  Should I try to update a bios available stating I have windows 10, when I am actually running 11?  What other possible fixes are there for the fan operation.

Fan physically runs fine, when it is running.  Plenty of air flow, system stays cool, no unusual noises.

Hi @Scraperman,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Updating the BIOS on your HP Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop PC 13 is a good step towards resolving fan issues and ensuring system stability. Here are the steps and additional suggestions.

BIOS Update

Check Compatibility: While HP supports BIOS updates for Windows 10, these updates are generally compatible with Windows 11 as well. However, it's always best to double-check the release notes for any specific mentions of compatibility or issues.

Backup Important Data: Before performing a BIOS update, make sure to back up any important data.

Update BIOS:

  • Go to the HP Support website and enter your laptop's model number.
  • Download the latest BIOS update available for your model.
  • Follow the instructions provided by HP for updating the BIOS. Usually, this involves running an executable file that performs the update.

Update Drivers: Ensure all your system drivers, particularly the chipset and thermal management drivers, are up to date. You can use HP Support Assistant to automatically find and install updates.

Check Power Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings.
  • Choose Change plan settings next to your selected power plan, then Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand Processor power management, then System cooling policy, and make sure it is set to Active.

Clean the Vents: Dust and debris can block airflow, causing the system to overheat. Use compressed air to clean the vents and fans.

Check for Software Issues:

  • Run a system scan to check for any malware or viruses that might be affecting system performance.
  • Use Task Manager to identify any processes that might be consuming excessive CPU resources and causing overheating.

Fan Control Software: Consider using fan control software like SpeedFan or a similar utility to monitor and manage fan speeds more effectively.

Battery Replacement: Since you mentioned the battery is swollen, replacing it should be a priority. A swollen battery can cause physical damage to your laptop and pose a safety risk.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
