Hi there

Just purchased the above laptop last week. Every time I turn it on and get to my login screen, i have to disable filter keys to let me use the keyboard to type my password. I have checked Ease of Access in control panel, and the keyboard options therein, and the filter keys function is unticked. So for some reason Filter keys is turning itself on when i power off or as part of the boot. Any ideas? It's really annoying....

thanks

This may be happening since the keyboard shortcut to activate Filter keys may still be enabled (this is the default). Under the Turn on Filter keys option, click the link that says Setup Filter Keys. Here, uncheck the option Turn on Filter keys when right SHIFT is pressed for 8 seconds.

@Ruggins

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Have you made any hardware/software changes?
  • Did you make any changes on the settings of your PC prior to the issue?
  • When was the last time it worked fine?

The FilterKeys shortcut key is the right SHIFT key. To enable the shortcut key to start FilterKeys functionality, use the following steps:

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Accessibility Options.
  2. Click the Keyboard tab, click Settings in the FilterKeys section, and then click the Use Shortcut check box to select it.
  3. Click OK, and then click OK again. (by Microsoft)

If you hold the right SHIFT key for eight seconds, the filter key will be turned on.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks @Echo_Lake

I only purchased the laptop last week, and it has been doing this since I bought it, so don't think it is due to an update. To be clear, I'm fine with how to turn filter keys off. I just don't understand why every time I log on, it goes back to On, so that I have to hold the right shift key down for 8 seconds before I can input my login password.
