Welcome to the HP Community --

The most important question is whether the unknown computer includes an actual fingerprint reader or whether the system is one of those in the model series for which the OPTION is available but the particular computer only includes a blank cover plate (or no key at all for the reader).

You can usually answer that as soon as you know the model name / product number of your computer.

Open the computer's

 HP Product Home

Enter the device type and model name of your HP product

Open Category Setup & User Guides

Find and open the Maintenance and Service Guide (name of document varies)

OR

For the purpose of simply checking the keyboard illustration(s) and Action keys, the User Guide will work just as well.

Note:  If you want to purchase and install a fingerprint reader, the part number and the procedure for that are in the Service guide (not the user guide).

The information you seek is near the beginning of the manual (of either type) --

Look for the keyboard illustration and Special or Action Keys information.

IF you get to the point where you need a driver, check in Category Software & Drivers for your Operating System version.

Review

The driver by itself is not enough -- the computer must have a real fingerprint reader installed in the hardware so the driver has something to control.

If the fingerprint reader is OPTIONAL on the series, it means your computer might have a fingerprint reader OR the computer might only a blank cover where the fingerprint reader would be located.  Yes, blank cover might look just like fingerprint reader -- same color.

True -- If your computer does not have a fingerprint reader, it can be purchased and added -- the Service Guide includes the part number and procedure.

If the Device Manager does not include category Biometric devices

then

The computer does not include the hardware for a working fingerprint reader.

Example - Device Manager - Biometric devices - Fingerprint - Camera
