When I boot up the screen boots up ok or it sometimes just goes to a flickering pixelated screen. Sometimes it boots up then minutes later goes black and flashes the large mixed up large flashing pixels again. So I’m constantly teenooting by holding the off button down. Have to do this several times to get a proper boot up

Hi @Bucksrockers1,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with the screen flickering and pixelation issues you’re experiencing on your HP Pavilion 14-ce1510sa, especially after a recent update, may be related to a problem with the graphics driver, the display hardware, or a compatibility issue introduced by the update. Here are steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Boot into Safe Mode
Safe Mode uses a basic display driver, bypassing potential driver conflicts.
- Restart your laptop and press F8 (or Shift + Restart) repeatedly during boot to access the recovery menu.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, and choose Enable Safe Mode.
If the issue doesn’t occur in Safe Mode, it’s likely driver-related.
2. Update or Roll Back Graphics Driver
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics driver, and choose:
- Update driver: Let Windows search for updates.
- If this doesn’t help, right-click again and choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
3. Perform a Clean Installation of the Graphics Driver
Sometimes, remnants of old drivers cause conflicts.
- Download the latest graphics driver for your model from the HP Support Website or directly from Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD (depending on your graphics card).
- Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to completely remove the existing driver.
- Install the freshly downloaded driver.
4. Check Windows Updates
A recent update may have caused a compatibility issue.
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update History > Uninstall Updates, and remove any recent display-related updates.
- Alternatively, check for new updates that may fix the issue.
5. Check Screen Connection (Hardware)
If the problem persists:
- The internal display connection may be loose or damaged.
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor/TV. If the external display works fine, the issue is likely with your laptop’s screen or its connectors.
6. Perform a System Restore
If the problem started after a specific update or installation:
- Press Win + R, type rstrui, and select a restore point before the issue began.
7. Run Hardware Diagnostics
HP laptops have a built-in diagnostic tool:
- Turn off the laptop and press Esc repeatedly as it starts, then select F2 (System Diagnostics).
- Run the display and system tests to check for hardware faults.

I hope this helps.
