Hi!

I’ve bought a secondhand HP Elitebook 8470p for the sole purpose of running a diagnostic program for my engines so I can check enginehours, codes and so on.

Got it home, it was cleared/rebooted by the old owner and I could make my own admin log-in.

Now, a year later when I’m finally all set up for using the program I can’t remember my admin-password to log in!

Is there a way to reboot the entire laptop? There is no data saved or anything on the laptop that is of any value, I just need it to my diagnostic program.

Grateful for any advice!

Hi @Lars87,

If you need to reset your HP EliteBook 8470p to restore access and you do not require any of the current data on the laptop, you can perform a factory reset. Here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Backup Important Data:

    • Since you mentioned there is no valuable data, you can skip this step. However, if you have any doubts, ensure that there is indeed no essential data on the device.
  2. Prepare for Reset:

    • Ensure the laptop is connected to a power source to prevent any interruptions during the process.
  3. Access Recovery Options:

    • Restart the laptop. As the computer restarts, repeatedly press the F11 key until you see the Recovery Manager screen.
  4. Using the Recovery Manager:

    • If prompted, select the option to troubleshoot or solve problems with the computer.
    • Choose Recovery Manager from the options presented.
    • Select System Recovery if available. This will restore the laptop to its original factory state, removing all user data and applications installed.
  5. Follow On-Screen Instructions:

    • Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the recovery process. This might take some time, and the laptop may restart several times during the process.
  6. Complete Setup:

    • Once the recovery process is complete, you can set up the laptop as if it were new, including creating a new administrator account and password.

If the F11 option does not take you to the Recovery Manager, you might need recovery media (USB or DVD) which can sometimes be ordered from HP if the original recovery partition is missing. Please consult the HP support website for specifics related to your model.
