After updating my HP laptop to Windows 11, it frequently freezes and displays the following pop-up message:
"Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart." After this message, the device attempts to update to 100% and then shuts down. This morning, it failed to update, remained at 0%, and the laptop froze.

Hi @Nkululeko2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP laptop is freezing and displaying a message indicating it ran into a problem. There are several steps you can take to resolve this issue, especially after a Windows 11 update:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off your computer.
  • Disconnect the AC adapter.
  • Remove any connected peripheral devices.
  • Press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the computer.

Disable Automatic Restart:

  • In Windows, search for and open "View advanced system settings."
  • In the Startup and Recovery section, click "Settings."
  • Uncheck "Automatically restart" to prevent your computer from restarting automatically when a problem occurs.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Open "Check for updates" in Windows.
  • Ensure all updates are completed. For optional updates, go to "Advanced options" in Windows 11 and select updates to install.

Update Your Drivers and BIOS:

  • Use the HP Support Assistant to check for and install any available updates, including BIOS updates.

Check for Overheating:

  • Ensure that your laptop has adequate ventilation and clean the vents to prevent overheating.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Search for the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows app and run extensive tests to check for hardware failures.

Perform a System Restore:

  • Use Microsoft System Restore to revert your computer to a state before the freezing issues began, using the Windows loading screen.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
