Bios is corrupt message on the computer. I have tried making a diagnostic usb and booting with win+b but it is not booting into the recovery environment. I confirmed the usb is named HP_TOOLS and has folders for bios update. Do I need to download a bios file separately? If so, I only see winflash.exe when I extract the files from sp153149?

Hi @Extremevoid,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're seeing a "BIOS is corrupt" message and your HP 17 laptop isn't booting into the recovery environment, here's what you can try.

Verify BIOS Recovery USB: Ensure that your USB drive is correctly prepared for BIOS recovery. It should be formatted to FAT32 and have the HP_TOOLS folder with the correct BIOS files.

BIOS File: The BIOS file typically includes the main BIOS firmware and might have a different extension than just winflash.exe. You need the BIOS update file, which is often named something like spXXXXXX.exe or XXXXX.bin. Here’s how to proceed:

Download the BIOS Update: Go to the HP Support website and search for your specific HP 17 laptop model. Download the latest BIOS update file for your model.

Extract BIOS Files: Use the spXXXXXX.exe file you downloaded to extract the BIOS update files. You can usually do this by running the .exe file on another working computer and following the prompts to extract the files to a folder.

Copy to USB: Once you have the extracted BIOS files, copy them to the root of the USB drive, ensuring they are in the HP_TOOLS folder.

Recover BIOS:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Insert the USB Drive into the laptop.
  • Perform the BIOS Recovery:
    • Turn on the laptop and immediately press and hold the Windows key and the B key simultaneously.
    • Continue holding the keys until you see the BIOS update screen or the laptop starts the recovery process.

Alternative Recovery Methods:

If the above method doesn't work, try creating a new USB recovery drive. Sometimes, reformatting and re-preparing the USB drive can resolve issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
