HP Notebook 17-y013na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP 17-y013na Notebook which for some reason has lost its Product name, Product serial number, Product number and System Board CT Number, all with all with error 00A. Also if I look in the BIOS there is all sorts of other data, regarding the computer, is missing.

I have hunted high and low on the web for how to fix this problem and have found the HP BIOS Configuration Utility. I have read the user guide and done lots more web searches and I’m now very good using this tool but still have not been able to correct the model, serial number, etc problem.

What happens is that when I put in a new serial number and give the /Set command the instruction fails and I get an error code 6 (Setting modification failed due to BIOS permissions). However, if I say change the parameter for Fan on/ Fan off it all works perfect without an error.

If I use the setvalue command to change the serial number I get an error 1 (Setting is not supported on system).

So far I have tried:

  1. with and without BIOS password option,
  2. put in a new BIOS battery
  3. cleared the CMOS memory.
  4. Done BIOS reset from the BIOS configuration utility and from the BIOS
  5. Installed the latest BIOS

The question I have is therefore two-fold

  • Am I using the right tool for my computer? If not what is the correct tool?
  • How what do I have to do to overcome the BIOS permissions problem.
  • Is entering data into the fields strict format, if so is there a document to cover the format.

My overall impression is that either I am using the wrong tool for my model or that some BIOS parameters are adjustable and others not. If parameters are not adjustable what is the next move? Note. This computer has now become a challenge so returning it to HP is not an option!
