HP ENVY - 15-as152nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

The laptop has been working reliably for the past 6 years (minus an occasional freeze that required a manual reboot using the button - quite rare, no more than once a month). The battery has been showing 0% for a long time, I always use it connected to the AC adapter so it didn't bother me that the battery died (when disconnecting, it would immediately turn off). It's been like that for at least a year.

A few days ago, the laptop turned off and wouldn't turn back on - the AC adapter LED (on the side of the laptop, not part of the AC adapter itself) was on, but pressing the power button didn't do anything - nothing on the screen, no beeps, no fan activity. When pressing the power button, the AC adapter LED would turn off for a few seconds, and then back on.

I moved the laptop to check it physically and I noticed the chassis was deformed, and after opening it (as per the maintenance and service guide), the battery had expanded, as I suspected. I removed it and tried to turn the laptop on, but it doesn't work - the symptoms are the same (except that the AC adapter LED was now only white or off, never going amber, even for a moment).

Is the laptop supposed to work without a battery, or do I have to get a replacement battery so I can test it and see if any other components are broken? Are the symptoms I'm seeing consistent with the issue being the battery, or do they indicate something else is broken (e.g. motherboard, AC adapter)?

If I need to get a new battery, how can I get an original HP battery (spare part number 849313-856)?

Thanks!
