All,

I have an HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1. It worked fine. I then added a 8gb DIMM of RAM, which helped it run faster with more stability.

Some of the keys were not working (I was using an external USB keyboard), so I replaced the keyboard. I am guessing something happened to the motherboard or the battery when I replaced the keyboard. I was careful with it since laptops use such small components, however clearly something is wrong. I'm guessing its a hardware issue.

So, I set about to diagnose and repair the problem. Here's what I've done:

  1. Checked the power supply (charger) with my DMM and its putting out 19vdc. When I plug the charger into the notebook, the charging light on the notebook turns on and then VERY quickly (almost instantly) turns off.
  2. Tried different booting options:
    • Booting the laptop with only the power supply connected (no battery)
    • Booting the laptop with only the battery connected (no power supply)
    • Booting the laptop with both the power supply and battery connected
    • Disconnecting the battery AND power supply, then pushing and holding the power button for 30 seconds (I used a timer), then reconnecting the battery and power supply, then trying to boot it again

None of the actions I have tried, has resulted in normal operations.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thank you for your time.
