HP Sure Start detected a write access failure in the HP Endpoint Security Controller

After an windows shutdown, and restart, I got an HP Endpoint Security Controller Problem:

"HP Sure Start detected a write access failure in the HP Endpoint Security Controller.
The repeated occurrence of this problem indicates a security concern that should not be ignored. See the HP Sure Start events in the Windows Event Log for more details about each HP Sure Start event."

Event Viewer only displays the following which doesn't tell me anything.

- <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">

- <System>

  <Provider Name="HP Sure Start" />

  <EventID Qualifiers="0">32</EventID>

  <Version>0</Version>

  <Level>4</Level>

  <Task>0</Task>

  <Opcode>0</Opcode>

  <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords>

  <TimeCreated SystemTime="2025-03-27T00:57:22.9941286Z" />

  <EventRecordID>14</EventRecordID>

  <Correlation />

  <Execution ProcessID="16992" ThreadID="0" />

  <Channel>HP Sure Start</Channel>

  <Computer>Computer</Computer>

  <Security />

  </System>

- <EventData>

  <Data>Sure Start log entry: Unknown Source: Unknown Timestamp: 25-03-27 14:14:34</Data>

  </EventData>

  </Event>

Any ideas? It seems to be a one off so far.

Thanks

@TimSWRB, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Sure Start Detection of a Write Access Failure!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

HP Sure Start is a security feature designed to protect the system BIOS from attacks and corruption. If HP Sure Start detects a write access failure in the HP Endpoint Security Controller, it indicates a potential security issue that warrants attention.

Check the Windows Event Viewer:

  • Open the Windows Event Viewer.
  • Navigate to System Tools/Event Viewer/Applications and Services Logs/HP Sure Start.
  • Look for detailed information about the write access failure and other related events.

Understand Event Categories:

  • Info: Events expected during normal operation.
  • Warning: Unexpected events that were recovered without user intervention.
  • Error: Events requiring administrative action for full recovery.

Possible Causes and Actions:

  • Firmware Corruption: If firmware corruption is detected, HP Sure Start will attempt to repair using its backup copy. Ensure all firmware updates are genuine and applied correctly.
  • Tampering Detection: Continuous tampering with BIOS settings or HP Endpoint Security Controller triggers this alert. Consider reviewing recent changes and updates.
  • Repeated Occurrences: A repeated failure may indicate persistent attacks or hardware issues. Seek assistance from HP support if needed.

Checking and Resolving Issues:

  • Restart the System: Sometimes, restarting can initiate automatic recovery processes.
  • Verify BIOS Settings: Navigate to BIOS settings (usually F10 setup at boot) and ensure proper configurations.
  • Check for Updates: Ensure BIOS and firmware are up-to-date and from official HP sources.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
