Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP Envy 13 Laptop that won't boot. When turning on when not plugged in, or with an AC adapter that isn't the one it came with, the computer's power indicator and fans turn on, but the power light and fans turn off after 1-2 seconds and the computer makes a soft clicking sound. The screen also doesn't turn on. When the computer is plugged in using the AC adapter it came with, the screen turns on and the HP logo displays. However, sometimes it simply turns off again with the same clicking sound. Other times, Windows starts loading but starts saying "Preparing Automatic Repair" followed by "Diagnosing Your PC". Then the laptop gets a blue screen error saying "Your PC did not start correctly". There's no error code that comes with this. The computer boots up in safe mode just fine. The problem began when I tried turning the computer on after 2 weeks of not using it. It was completely untouched during those 2 weeks. So far, I've tried resetting the BIOS using Windows+B+power button (for 2 seconds), a hard reset, and turning off all non-windows startup apps. I also tried booting an Ubuntu installation media from a USB to see if it would boot, but I got the error "ACPI BIOS Error". Any Ideas on how to fix this?

Hi @rpraduman10,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you've already taken it, but there are a few potential issues to explore further. Here's a structured approach to diagnosing and possibly resolving the problem:

Hardware Diagnostic Checks

Battery and Power Adapter:

  • Since the laptop behaves differently with the original AC adapter compared to others, ensure that the battery and the power adapter are functioning correctly.
  • Check if the battery is seated correctly and try removing it (if possible) to run the laptop solely on the AC adapter.
  • Consider replacing the battery if it's removable and testing the laptop with a known good battery.

Memory (RAM):

  • Faulty RAM can cause boot issues. If your laptop has easily accessible RAM, try reseating the modules or testing each module individually if there are multiple.

Storage Device (SSD/HDD):

  • A failing SSD/HDD can cause boot problems. If you can access the BIOS/UEFI, run any available diagnostics on the storage device.
  • If you have another SSD/HDD, try swapping it out to see if the issue persists.

Software Diagnostic Checks

Booting in Safe Mode:

  • Since the laptop boots in safe mode, the issue might be related to drivers or software corruption. In safe mode, try uninstalling any recently installed drivers or updates that might be causing the problem.

System File Check:

  • Run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in an elevated Command Prompt to check for and repair any system file corruption.

Startup Repair:

  • Boot into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and run Startup Repair. This can be done by interrupting the boot process three times to trigger WinRE.

Advanced Troubleshooting

Disable Fast Startup:

  • Sometimes, Fast Startup can cause boot issues. Disable it by going to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable, and then uncheck "Turn on fast startup".

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Ensure the BIOS/UEFI is up to date. Check the HP website for any firmware updates.
  • Reset BIOS/UEFI settings to default and ensure settings related to ACPI are properly configured.

Check for Overheating:

  • Ensure the cooling system is working correctly. Overheating could cause the laptop to shut down.

Reinstallation

  1. Windows Reinstallation:
    • If none of the above steps resolve the issue, consider backing up your data and performing a clean installation of Windows. This can help rule out any software-related issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
