hello,

on friday afternoon I switched my HP Envy 14 into sleepmode without a charger on. When I wanted to wake it up on sunday it wouldn‘t start.  The charging light on the charging port was orange once I plugged it in. After a few minutes it would start for maybe 3 seconds. Display coming to life but staying in a kind of bright black, fans working and then it shuts off again.

The next morning it started just fine. So I left it on the charger because I thought the battery might be discharged. Now I wanted to switch it all on again. Charger connected and the LED on the charger port is white. When I try to switch it on, the power buttons LED is glowing in white for 5 seconds, the cooling fans start and it goes off again. Display stays black.

Did you ever have this before and how did you solve it? Since it worked fine on monday I think it should be saveable. Its now 3 years old and its predecessor is still working after 12 years now.

A little update:

The device is a HP ENVY Laptop PC 14-eb0000 (167S1AV)

I got the device to boot this morning. Tried the UEFI Test which rebooted the system. System crash again - so I contacted the support and did another BIOS Recovery. Didn't work either.

I put the laptop in the fridge for 5 min to cool it down and check if it had something to do with heat performance (which shouldn't cause problems on a switched off laptop anyway). That actually did the trick for another successful boot.

I got the system running and performed a few tests including all (except for UEFI) Tests with the HP Diagnostic tool, PC Mark10 (over 4100 Points) and everything seems to be totally fine. Even the Battery health seems to be fine.

I don't know what causes this trouble but I'm scared of turning the device off another time.

Are there any other checks I can perform without rebooting (UEFI) to find out whats wrong?

@ChrisS88, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP Envy 14 that doesn‘t start up!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your HP Envy 14. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the problem:

Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect any peripheral devices (external keyboards, mice, etc.).
  • Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter (without the battery) and try to turn on the laptop.

Check Battery and Charger:

  • Ensure the charger is working properly. Try using a different charger if available.
  • If the battery is removable, try booting the laptop without the battery, using just the charger.

Perform BIOS Recovery:

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect the power cord.
  • Press and hold the Windows key and the B key simultaneously.
  • While holding these keys, press and hold the power button for 2 to 3 seconds, then release the power button but keep holding the Windows and B keys until the BIOS recovery screen appears.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you Zoey,

these are actually the steps I tried before contacting the support, the retried with the support. Also flashed the Bios with an external USB-Drive.

Currently the Laptop is running non stop as long as possible. What I would prefer trying is to check if Bios/UEFI is broken but without rebooting directly from Windows. The HP Tool needs a reboot. Do you know other tools that work directly from Windows without reboot?

Do you maybe know a tool that will check the motherboard if anything is physically corrupted there which is not interfering on a running PC but could face Problems on startup?

@ChrisS88, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you so much for posting your query! My colleague is currently out, but don't worry – I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.

1. Check for Errors

Event Viewer: Look for system errors. Go to Start > search for Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System. Check for warnings or errors at the time of the issue.

Battery Report: Open Command Prompt as Admin and type "powercfg /batteryreport". Check the report for battery issues.

2. Run Basic System Checks

System File Check: Open Command Prompt as Admin, type sfc /scannow, and press Enter. This checks for corrupted files.

Disk Check: Open Command Prompt as Admin, type chkdsk C: /f and press Enter (it’ll check your drive for errors).

3. Check RAM

Run a memory test. Press Windows + R, type mdsched.exe, and choose Restart now and check for problems.

4. Check BIOS Version

Open Run, type msinfo32, and press Enter. Look for "BIOS Version/Date" to check your BIOS version. Make sure it’s up to date.

5. Disconnect External Devices

Disconnect all USB devices and peripherals. Sometimes they can cause startup issues.

I truly hope these steps help get things back on track. If you have any questions or need any further clarification, just let me know – I’m happy to guide you through it and make sure everything works perfectly.

Take care, and I hope you have an amazing day ahead! 😊

Problem solved? 🎉 That’s fantastic! If you could mark this as the Accepted Solution, it would help others find their way here faster. And if you found this helpful, a simple ‘yes’ would mean a lot – it makes my day and gives this reply a little street cred! 🏅
