Envy

I've had my HP Envy for about 5 years now. It's been great, no issues in terms of speed, hardware/software issues. I've mainly used it for graduate school, surfing the internet, and work (I'm a teacher and a football coach). The vast majority of my work on the computer is using Microsoft Office, and the internet for email, film, and online schooling (Google Classroom).

Recently, my computer has struggled to turn on. I can plug it up, and it will turn on. I can turn it off, and turn it back on just fine. However, if I unplug it, it will not turn on. If I leave it plugged up, and let it sit overnight or for any extended period of time. It will not turn back on. I've taken the battery out and tried plugging it up and it will turn on every time. I replaced the battery, still having the same issues. I've replaced the RAM Sticks, still having the same issues. It's a nice laptop, and I feel as though I should not be having these issues after only 5 years. I don't overuse the laptop, and it was over $1,000. I really don't want to have to go buy another laptop already.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @CJG74,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Your HP Envy's inconsistent power-on behavior is likely caused by a hardware issue related to power delivery or internal components. Since you've already replaced the battery and RAM, here are additional steps to identify and possibly resolve the issue.

Faulty Power Button or Circuit:

  • The power button or its circuitry may not be working properly.
  • Solution: Test the power button by using the laptop's built-in reset. On many HP laptops, holding the power button for 15–30 seconds with the battery and charger unplugged performs a hardware reset. If this works sporadically, the power button circuit might need repair.

Motherboard or Charging Circuit Issues:

  • There could be an issue with the internal charging circuit, preventing proper power delivery when switching between AC and battery power.
  • Solution: Inspect for physical damage or signs of overheating (burn marks) inside the laptop. This requires professional inspection if you're not comfortable opening it.

CMOS Battery Issue:

  • A failing CMOS battery can cause erratic startup behavior.
  • Solution: Replace the CMOS battery. It's a small coin-cell battery located on the motherboard.

AC Adapter or Charging Port:

  • The power adapter or charging port could be delivering inconsistent power.
  • Solution: Test with a different, compatible HP charger. Check if the charging port is loose or damaged.

BIOS or Firmware Issue:

  • The BIOS might be corrupted, affecting power management.
  • Solution: Update the BIOS to the latest version available from HP's support site for your laptop model. Be sure the laptop is stable during the update to avoid bricking.

Thermal Issues:

  • Over time, thermal paste on the CPU can degrade, or dust buildup can cause overheating, triggering protective shutdowns.
  • Solution: Clean the laptop's fans and vents. Reapply thermal paste if necessary.

Power Jack or Internal Connection:

  • A loose or damaged connection where the power adapter plugs into the motherboard can cause these symptoms.
  • Solution: Check or replace the power jack. This often requires soldering and should be done by a technician.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
