After last night's (11/30/2024) Windiws 11 update, my envy laptop will not get past the black HP logo screen with "System updates are underway. Please keep your device on and plugged in."
I have turned off for hours ant tried using F8 on boot up to choose safe mode. Keeps going to this screen. Has been here for 12+ hours.
Help!!

Hi @Jonl1968,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Envy laptop is stuck in a system update loop after the latest Windows 11 update. Here are some steps to try and resolve the issue:
1. Force Shutdown and Restart
- Hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds until the laptop completely shuts off.
- Wait a few moments, then turn it back on to see if it resumes the update or starts up normally.
2. Enter Advanced Startup Options
Since F8 did not work for safe mode, you can try the following steps to access advanced startup options:
- Turn off the laptop completely.
- Turn it on and immediately press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to force a shutdown while it’s starting up.
- Repeat this process 2-3 times. On the 3rd attempt, Windows should enter Recovery Mode.
- Once in recovery mode, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair to let Windows attempt to fix the boot issue.
3. System Restore (if available)
If Startup Repair doesn’t work, try System Restore:
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
- Choose a restore point before the update and let it restore the system to that state.
4. Uninstall Latest Windows Update
If the update is causing the issue, you can uninstall it through the recovery environment:
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Select Uninstall Latest Quality Update or Uninstall Latest Feature Update depending on what was installed.
5. Reset Your PC
If the above steps don’t work, you may need to reset your PC:
- Go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Choose Keep my files to retain personal files or Remove everything for a full reset.
These steps should help resolve the issue. If the problem persists, it might be helpful to contact HP support for additional troubleshooting. Let me know how it goes!
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
