Randomly my laptop will restart without warning, so far only over night. Does not reboot, just off. Laptop is always plugged in, battery always 100%. Never anything different. Laptop is never hot or overheating. I have antivirus software and it is up to date.
I thought it was updating but I checked my Update History and that's not it.
Can anyone help? Thanks!

Hi @djsomers,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Experiencing unexpected restarts on your laptop can be frustrating, but there are several potential reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.
Check Event Viewer:
- Open the Event Viewer by right-clicking on the Start button and selecting "Event Viewer."
- Navigate to "Windows Logs" and then "System."
- Look for critical errors or warnings around the time of the unexpected restart. This might provide more information about the cause.
Windows Updates:
- Although you mentioned that it's not related to updates, it's worth ensuring that your system is fully up to date. Sometimes, updates can cause issues.
- Check for updates manually and install any pending updates.
Power Settings:
- Ensure that your power settings are configured correctly. Go to "Control Panel" > "Power Options" and make sure your power plan is suitable for your usage.
- Adjust advanced power settings to prevent the system from automatically restarting. Look for options related to sleep, hibernate, and power buttons.
Driver Updates:
- Make sure all your device drivers are up to date, especially graphics, chipset, and network drivers.
- Visit the HP website for your laptop model and download the latest drivers.
Check for Malware:
- Run a full system scan with your antivirus software to make sure your system is not infected.
Temperature Monitoring:
- Even if you don't feel your laptop getting hot, it's worth monitoring the temperature. Use software like HWMonitor to check CPU and GPU temperatures.
- Overheating could still be a factor, and monitoring temperatures can help rule it out.
Power Supply Issues:
- Sometimes, faulty power supplies or issues with the power outlet can cause unexpected shutdowns. Try using a different power outlet or power supply if possible.
Windows Reliability Monitor:
- Open the Reliability Monitor by searching for "Reliability Monitor" in the Start menu.
- Look for critical events and warnings around the time of the restart.
Check Scheduled Tasks:
- Some tasks or processes might be set to run at specific times. Check your Task Scheduler for any tasks that coincide with the times of the unexpected restarts.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks SO much, Alden 4, for all the suggestions. I will check them out. So far, I have checked the Event log errors and there are many of them, with the major ones saying: ": The embedded controller (EC) returned data when none was requested. The BIOS might be trying to access the EC without synchronizing with the operating system. This data will be ignored. No further action is necessary; however, you should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS." I received "error" messages, but also "warning" ones. I will call HPSmartFriend to see if there is an update to my BIOS. Seems like that would have been done automatically. I manually checked and was told my system is up-to-date.
I don't know if this error message has to do with my laptop restarting on its own. It doesn't sound like it to me.
WARNING, ACPI, 15 None; and, Error!, ACPI 13 None. This is happening several times a day.
I'm also getting other Error messages, so rather than taking your time, I just need to call HP SmartFriend to get issues resolved.
Thanks again for your help!
