HP Envy x360 15.6 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 15-fe0000 (77X86AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

HP Envy won't start. Multiple attempts at hard reboot have failed. Power button light comes on and fan comes on. Sometimes I get a blink code of 5-3 white light on cap lock.

Hi @LarryG88,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Envy x360 15.6-inch 2-in-1 Laptop is stuck in a state where it isn't fully booting up, but you're seeing some signs of life like the power light and fan. The 5-3 blink code you're seeing on the Caps Lock key typically indicates a hardware-related issue.

Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot.

Hard Reboot:

  • Disconnect all peripherals (USB devices, external monitors, etc.).
  • Hold down the power button for 15-30 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Release the power button and attempt to power on the laptop again.
  • Sometimes a hard reset helps clear minor hardware or firmware issues.

Perform a BIOS Recovery:

  • Press and hold the Windows key + B key (or Windows key + V key, depending on your model) on the keyboard while pressing the power button. Keep holding the keys until you hear beeps or see the HP logo. This can trigger a BIOS recovery process if there's a corruption in the BIOS.

Check the Blink Code:

  • The 5-3 blink code usually refers to a memory (RAM) issue. You can try the following:
    • Power off the laptop.
    • Remove the battery (if removable) and power cord.
    • Re-seat or swap out the RAM modules if you're comfortable doing so. If you have more than one RAM stick, try booting with just one installed.

Check the Power Supply:

  • Make sure your charger is working and supplying enough power. If possible, test with another charger or power cable.
  • A faulty charger or battery could prevent the laptop from booting properly.

External Display:

  • If the laptop seems to power on but the screen remains black, try connecting an external monitor to check if there’s an issue with the internal display.

Hardware Diagnostics:

  • If the laptop attempts to power on and you hear beeping or see the HP logo, you can try running HP's built-in hardware diagnostics:
    • Power off the laptop.
    • Press Esc repeatedly while powering on the laptop to open the startup menu.
    • Select F2 to run the diagnostics and see if any hardware components (like RAM, motherboard, etc.) show errors.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
