Envy m7-n101dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
I've had problems with my laptop for a couple of months after updating. Windows Mail disappeared, etc. And I ended up having to reinstall Windows 10. On Friday after an update, my computer booted up after applying the update and then all of a sudden died. Now it won't even turn on. Took it to Best Buy and they confirmed it's not the power cord, it's the computer. It had something to do with the update. Any ideas so I don't have to buy a new laptop? It sure won't be an HP again if their updates (or Intel's) cause problems.

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂

Thank you for posting on HP Forums, MKazi is at your service.

I understand that you have an HP ENVY Notebook - m7-n101dx and post an update, the laptop does not turn on. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

To assist you better, I would like to know the following information:

  • Do you remember was it an update from HP or Windows? Or was it a BIOS update?
  • When you say it does not turn on, do you mean to say that there are no lights on the laptop? No lights even at the place where the charger connects?

While you respond to that, I would like to mention that due to a software update from HP or Microsoft, the laptop should not power off. It is possible that the laptop may stop booting into Windows. But the software can not cause the laptop to completely power off?

I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:
NOTE: Please skip any steps that have been already attempted?

  • Disconnect the charger. Remove the battery out. If the battery is integrated and does not have a latch to release it then leave the battery inside the laptop.
  • Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter.
  • Power ON the laptop.

If the laptop still does not power on, disconnect the charger and remove the battery out. Then try to power on the laptop using only the charger (without the battery). Likewise, connect only the battery and try to power on the laptop.

In case there are no signs of the laptop powering using the battery alone and the charger alone then it indicates towards a hardware issue with the laptop. In such a case you may contact our HP phone support team to explore the available service options. Please click here to reach out to HP phone support.

Feel free to let me know how it goes. I'm always here to assist you.

Good luck! 🙂
