HP ENVY x360 Laptop - 13-ay0009na

Hi. Randomly (but usually after extended runtime, laptop in use for a few hours and not hibernated/shutdown for a long time) the laptop will not sleep properly.

This is a modern standby laptop and it should consume less than 1W in sleep modeScreenshot 2023-02-11 011750.png

Sometimes it uses 6w in sleep mode, draining the laptop 20% battery in 1hr. This is unacceptable.

The green session at the bottom shows what it should be like, draining 10% battery in 7hrs. This worked because the machine was hibernated at 18:51 the previous day, it was started at 15:16 and then placed into sleep at 16:01.

I have reinstalled Windows 11. All drivers are up to date using the OEM provided ones through windows update / HP support assistant.

One way to see this happening is to put the laptop in sleep mode with the lid open and the sound muted (orange mute led active). If the laptop sleeps properly, the mute LED will turn off in approximately 30s-1min and stay off. If the laptop goes into this sleep bug then the mute LED starts blinking.

Please can this issue be addressed to bios team for F23 update, or allow us to downgrade to F21 bios.

Hi, if anyone is reading this the new BIOS update claims to fix this. F23.

Please update your BIOS (either by going on the HP website or through Windows Update Optional Updates).

Thanks Elohi for your support 🙂

I would like to point out that I have found 2 other users with similar issues on the same series of laptop. I believe this is a BIOS bug and I cannot rollback the bios.. Please can we get a fix ASAP.

Can confirm I have the same bug, and the fact that I can't rollback to the previous BIOS using the backup, that was stored by the updater itself in the EFI partition, and using the official EFI HP Diagnostics tool is just ridiculous.

Hello @Elohi_NR , my battery is fine, I've not had any warnings. I tested it using UEFI hardware diagnostics and it passed

Unfortunately, the SSD boot drive in my laptop failed quite recently, and so I bought another one and installed windows onto this. I used HP support assistant and Windows Update to install all the drivers. This does mean that I do not have the old BIOS saved and so cannot downgrade.

I have tried downgrading with the HP bios tool putting the bios onto a USB drive, and it gives me an error saying cannot find signature, a bit like Vb-03 in this thread.

I am running Windows 11 home edition, 22H2, with all required HP software and drivers installed.

Hi @Michaelflat1,

Thanks for writing back.

If your HP Envy 360 is experiencing battery drain while in sleep mode, there are several possible causes and solutions you can try:

Power settings: Check your power settings to make sure that your device is set to enter sleep mode after a certain period of inactivity. You can do this by going to Settings > System > Power & Sleep. Make sure that "Sleep" is selected as the option when the device is not in use.

Background processes: Certain applications or processes may be running in the background even while the device is in sleep mode, which can cause a battery drain. You can check the Task Manager to see if there are any processes that are using a lot of CPU or memory. You can try to end these processes or uninstall the apps that are causing the issue.

Windows updates: Sometimes, an update to the Windows operating system can cause battery drain issues. Make sure your device is running the latest version of Windows and that any known bugs have been fixed.

Drivers: Outdated or malfunctioning device drivers can cause issues with power management, which can lead to battery drain in sleep mode. Check the HP support website for the latest drivers for your device and install any updates that are available.

Also if possible, kindly share the system information:

Press the Windows key- then type system information-go to file-save the file and share it.

Thank you

Hello @Elohi_NR

Please find attached system info.

https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aoi1voX-EdDmh8Qhd5iKUhXRoIVIUw?e=I0dDj7

The system is fully up to date and no background processes are preventing sleep. This issue only started after the latest BIOS Firmware update (F22), so I think it may be due to this. All drivers are up to date according to HP Support Assistant.

I hope that we can downgrade to F21 BIOS or an F23 BIOS is released soon fixing the issue.

Thanks,

Michael.

Hi @Michaelflat1,

We can try downgrading the bios to the Older version and see how it goes. However, Have you updated the drivers like windows update and HPSA ( HP support assistant)?

You may refer to the steps below;

Use the HP PC  Hardware Diagnostics UEFI to roll back the BIOS.

Connect the notebook to the power adapter.

Press the power button and immediately tap the F2 key.

In the Hardware Diagnostics UEFI window click on Firmware management.

In the next window, you should see the option that is titled BIOS Rollback.  Click on it.

If you already have an HP support assistant which is not been installed recently, you can uninstall and reinstall it and update the drivers from HPSA. Click here

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi @Elohi_NR

Unfortunately I have already tried to downgrade the BIOS to F21, but it doesn't work. I get an error message saying signature not found (or something like that). The user in the thread @Vb-03 also has the same issue.

I have tried putting the F21 BIOS onto a USB memory stick and using HP UEFI diagnostics that way, but it still doesn't work, same error 'signature not found'. I think F22 bios doesn't allow you to rollback.

If needed I can try again and send a photo of the error.
