Hello,
I have a brand new HP Envy Laptop 17-da0xxx. Everything was working fine, until it randomly started asking me to pick an Operating System every time my computer loaded. I had 2 options, both labeled "Windows 11" - if I chose the top option, the laptop loaded fine. If I chose the bottom option, I was looped back to the options screen.
I got annoyed with having to choose an OS every time I turned on the laptop, so I went into Advanced System Settings > Default OS > Chose one of the "Windows 11" options since there were 2 > Unchecked "Time to display list of Operating Systems"
Now every time I start the laptop I'm stuck in a black screen loop. Guess I chose the wrong "Windows 11" OS to boot from. How do I fix this?

@SSamayoa, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Ah, the joys of technology—one minute your laptop is working like a charm, and the next, it’s giving you a pop quiz about which version of Windows you want to boot into 🤦♂️.
No worries! We'll get this fixed and have things back to normal in no time 💪. Let’s dive in! 🚀
Boot into Advanced Startup Options
- Turn off your laptop completely.
- Turn it back on, and as soon as you see the HP logo, immediately press the F11 key repeatedly (about every second) to enter the Advanced Startup Options menu.
- If F11 doesn't work, you might need to try a different key combination (such as ESC, F8, or a different function key).
Use the Startup Repair Tool
- Once in the Advanced Startup Options screen, select Troubleshoot.
- Then select Advanced Options.
- In the Advanced Options menu, choose Startup Repair.
- Windows will attempt to automatically detect and repair any issues with the boot process.
- Let the process run and check if it resolves the issue. If it does, your system should boot correctly.
Use the Command Prompt to Fix Boot Issues
If Startup Repair doesn't fix the problem, you can try manually repairing the boot process via the Command Prompt in the Advanced Startup Options:
- Go back to the Advanced Options screen (if you're not already there).
- Select Command Prompt.
- In the Command Prompt window, type the following commands one at a time, pressing Enter after each:
- bootrec /fixmbr
- bootrec /fixboot
- bootrec /scanos
- bootrec /rebuildbcd
- After running these commands, exit the Command Prompt by typing exit and press Enter.
- Restart your computer and check if it now boots into Windows without the OS selection screen.

Restore System to Previous State (System Restore)
If none of the above works, you can restore your system to a previous point before the issue started:
- Return to the Advanced Startup Options screen.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the issue began and follow the on-screen prompts to restore your system.
Reset Your PC (Last Resort)
If you're still stuck and can't fix the boot issue, you can try a factory reset, which will restore your laptop to its default settings. Be aware that this will remove all of your personal files, apps, and settings.
- Go back to the Advanced Startup Options screen.
- Select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Choose either keep my files or remove everything (if you want to fully wipe your system).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the laptop.
Reinstall Windows (If All Else Fails)
As a final option, you can reinstall Windows 11 entirely using a USB installation drive:
- Use another computer to create a bootable Windows 11 USB installation drive.
- Insert the drive into your HP laptop and restart it.
- Boot from the USB drive (you might need to press F9 or ESC to select the boot device).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall Windows.
And there you have it—hopefully, your laptop is back on track and booting like a pro 🎉.
