On startup, screen will no turn on but remains black. I have done a hard reset several times to no avail. I have removed and checked the hard disk and it is fine. I have tested the HP G62 with a different hard drive and nothing.
I have searched for the error code but have not found it. The caps lock led (white) will blink once every 4 seconds and the led on the f12 key (red led) remains on.
Fan is heard to be working.
Would the video card be busted? I've tried to turn it on with an external video plugged in, to no avail.

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂
Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. I came across your post and would like to help.
I understand that you have an HP G62 series laptop. I read that when you power on the laptop, the screen remains black. The caps lock light blinks once every 4 seconds. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.
I would like to know the following information to assist you better:
- Did any hardware changes take place on the laptop recently apart from the steps you have tried so far?
- Please let me know the exact laptop model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l
I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:
- Please power off the laptop and remove the battery out.
- Disconnect the charger from the laptop.
- Remove the memory module and insert in another slot and check if the laptop boots up. If there are two memory modules then you might have to try one at a time and swap them and check. The steps to remove the memory is listed in page# 50 of the user guide.
Finally, if the issue persists then I suggest you to perform a BIOS recovery. Please refer to the steps mentioned under "Step 1: Recover the BIOS using a key press combination".
I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Let me know how it goes. Good luck! 🙂

A BIOS recovery apparently did the trick.
System recovered bios and booted to Windows. But then I wanted to reboot the machine to get into the bios and find the product number.
So I pressed the power button to turn the machine off, and guess what?
The laptop is back to the caps blink of death screen.
It seems like pressing the power button put the laptop into hibernate mode and it now refuses to snap out.
Anyways, I now found the product number behind the battery:
Product: WQ843UA#ABA
Model: G62-229WM
I tried to do the BIOS reset again, but refuses to step out of the caps blink of death screen.

Thanks for replying. You've been fabulous to work with considering your superb technical skills, remarkable patience and great attitude. Kudos to you for that.
I suggest you to perform a hard reset again on the laptop and then try a BIOS recovery.
But if the issue persists then I suggest you to contact our HP phone support to explore the hardware service options for the laptop.
All the best! 🙂
