Hi HP Community,
I’m having an issue with my HP notebook where it either doesn’t boot properly or freezes (locks up) during startup or while running. When I press the power button, the laptop sometimes stays stuck on the HP logo, and other times it starts but becomes unresponsive after a few minutes.
I’ve already tried:
Removing and reconnecting the battery and power cable
Performing a hard reset
Checking RAM and storage connections
Running HP Hardware Diagnostics
Despite these steps, the issue still continues.
Can anyone guide me on what else I can try or if this could be a motherboard or BIOS-related problem?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or troubleshooting steps!

Hi @rooxzeen
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
This issue may stem from BIOS corruption, storage faults, or system file damage. You can attempt BIOS recovery, reset system files, and verify storage health before considering hardware-level causes.
It’s incredibly frustrating when your laptop teases you with signs of life only to freeze or stall. You’ve already taken solid steps—let’s build on that with a few deeper recovery options that often resolve this kind of behavior.
1. Try BIOS Recovery (if supported)
Corrupted BIOS can cause freezing at the logo or erratic startup.
- Turn off the laptop completely.
- Press and hold Windows key + B, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds.
- Release the power button but keep holding Windows + B for 10–15 seconds.
- If supported, the BIOS recovery screen should appear.
More details: HP BIOS Recovery Guide
2. Reset system files using Startup Repair
If Windows is partially loading and freezing, system file corruption may be the cause.
- Power on and interrupt the boot 3 times (force shutdown during logo).
- This should trigger Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Advanced Options > Startup Repair.
- Follow prompts to scan and repair system files.
3. Run HP UEFI Diagnostics from outside Windows
Even if HP Hardware Diagnostics didn’t show issues, try the offline version for deeper checks.
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press Esc repeatedly during startup, then press F2 for diagnostics.
- Run System Tests > Extensive Test (takes 2+ hours).
- Pay close attention to storage and memory results.
Guide: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI
4. Check for SSD/HDD health and firmware issues
If your laptop uses an SSD, freezing can occur due to firmware bugs or drive failure.
- Use HP’s storage diagnostic tools:
HP Storage Diagnostic Guide - If possible, connect the drive to another PC and run CrystalDiskInfo or similar tools.
5. Consider a clean Windows reinstall
If diagnostics pass and BIOS recovery doesn’t help, reinstalling Windows may clear lingering corruption.
- Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool:
HP Cloud Recovery Tool - Follow instructions to create a recovery USB and reinstall the OS.
If the system continues to freeze even after BIOS recovery and clean install, the issue may involve the motherboard or embedded controller.
Let me know your exact model number and I can check for firmware updates or known fixes tailored to your device.
