My laptop is showing a black screen, with only the caps lock light on which holds the light, and then blinks twice every 30 seconds or so.

I’ve tried all of the methods such as holding the power button, doing the ctrl + shift + windows button + b trick, etc, it hasn’t worked.

The problem is, the laptop doesn’t fully turn off - when I hold the power button , eventually the caps lock light will go off but as soon as I release the power it comes back.

Please help!

@sulanmu7, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

The issue you're describing, black screen with Caps Lock blinking twice every 30 seconds, typically indicates a BIOS corruption or hardware failure, often related to the system board or memory.

Let’s try these steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  2. Unplug all peripherals (USB drives, external monitors, etc.).
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect only the power adapter and try powering on.

Try a BIOS Recovery

HP laptops have a built-in BIOS recovery feature. Here's how to trigger it:

  1. Turn off the laptop completely (hold power button until all lights go off).
  2. Press and hold Windows key + B, then press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds.
  3. Release the power button but continue holding Windows + B for another 10 seconds.
  4. If successful, the screen should light up and initiate BIOS recovery.

Check for Memory Issues

If BIOS recovery doesn’t work, try reseating or replacing the RAM:

  1. Power off the laptop and remove the back panel.
  2. Carefully remove and reinsert the RAM modules.
  3. If you have two modules, try booting with one at a time to isolate a faulty stick.

If none of the above steps work, the issue may be with the motherboard or graphics chip. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
